Punjab Government Doctors Strike: In a significant development, the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) has deferred its call for the suspension of services in hospitals till January 23. The association has taken the decision after the Punjab health department assured the resolution of all the long-pending demands by the doctors.
Earlier, PCMSA members of over 2,500 doctors announced that they would resume their agitation from January 20, citing unmet demands by the government. Their main demands involved the restoration of DACP and better security for health workers.
PCMSA President Dr. Akhil Sarin on Sunday said a productive discussion took place with the senior officials from the health department on January 17, during a meeting in Moga. The health department has proposed a suggestion that was also agreed upon by the PCMSA. They have assured doctors that the requisite notifications will come out soon; perhaps in the first half of the next week.
Dr. Sarin expressed confidence in the government’s sincerity and the health department’s efforts, announcing that the call for agitation would be deferred by four days. He stated, “The PCMSA reposes faith in the government and acknowledges the sincere efforts put in by the health department. We will defer our agitation until January 23.”
The president of the PCMSA’s Patiala unit, Dr Sumeet Singh, stated that the next general body meeting of the association would be held on January 23, after which further actions would be decided in accordance with the progress of the government.
This development has brought relief to the patients of Punjab, who were getting worried that the health services might be disrupted due to such turmoil. However, the doctors have made it clear that if their demands are not met, then they will resume their agitation from January 23 itself.
