In a chilling twist to a love story that ended in bloodshed, Sonam Raghuvanshi—now the prime accused in the shocking murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi—reportedly returned to Indore and lived undetected in a rented flat for three days after the crime. This startling revelation came from police sources who disclosed on Tuesday that Sonam stayed at a flat in the Dewas Naka area between May 25 and 27, shortly after the murder in Meghalaya.
The brutal killing has gripped national attention ever since Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was discovered in a remote forested area of Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills on June 2, nearly ten days after he and Sonam vanished during their honeymoon trip. According to police investigations, Raja was attacked and killed with sharp weapons by three men allegedly hired by Sonam herself.
Authorities from both Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya have been working closely to trace the sequence of events. Based on the interrogation of one of the accused, Vishal Chauhan, clothes believed to have been worn during the crime were recovered from his Indore residence. These garments will now be sent to a forensic lab to test for possible blood stains.
The murder plot reportedly unfolded while the couple was on their honeymoon, following their wedding on May 11 in Indore. Investigators believe that Sonam conspired with Raj Kushwaha—allegedly her lover and employee of her family’s furniture business—to orchestrate the killing. Kushwaha, however, stayed back in Indore to avoid suspicion, while three young men executed the plan in Meghalaya.
The accused, Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi, aged between 19 and 25, were taken into custody from various locations in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. They are now in transit custody of the Meghalaya Police and have been transported to Shillong for further investigation.
A dramatic moment unfolded at Indore Airport on Tuesday night when a civilian, angered by the crime, slapped one of the accused as they were being escorted by police. The moment was caught on video and quickly went viral, fueling public outrage.
Meanwhile, police have confirmed that the murder was premeditated. A local guide in Meghalaya identified one of the accused from photographs, confirming that the three men accompanied Sonam and Raja on the day they went missing. The autopsy revealed that Raja suffered two fatal blows to the head with a sharp weapon—one from the front and another from behind—suggesting a planned and vicious attack.
Back in Indore, the families of both the victim and the accused are dealing with the aftermath. Raja’s mother, Uma, expressed heartbreak and disbelief, stating that she initially couldn’t imagine Sonam orchestrating such a crime but has now come to terms with the horrifying truth. “If she loved someone else, why didn’t she say no to the marriage? Why kill my son?” she asked.
Raja’s father, Ashok Raghuvanshi, has demanded the death penalty for all involved, saying that only the harshest punishment would serve justice for his son.
On the other side, Raj Kushwaha’s mother, Chunni Devi, and sister, Suhani, have come forward to defend him. They deny any romantic involvement between Raj and Sonam, insisting their relationship was purely professional. “He called her didi. She called him bhaiya,” Suhani emphasized.
As the investigation unfolds, more disturbing details are likely to emerge. The case has not only stunned the city of Indore but has also triggered a nationwide debate on trust, betrayal, and how a dream honeymoon turned into a nightmare that ended in murder.
