Punjab Revises Power Tariff: – The Punjab government has announced a new power tariff structure, bringing changes that will primarily impact industrial consumers operating during night hours. However, domestic and commercial consumers can breathe a sigh of relief as their electricity rates remain unchanged.
According to the revised tariff order, industries that run at night will now have to pay 25 paise extra per unit. Previously, the night tariff for industrial units was ₹5.25 per unit, which has now been increased to ₹5.50 per unit.
Industries to Bear the Burden
The decision is expected to affect various industrial sectors relying on nighttime operations to optimize productivity and manage peak-hour electricity costs. Industry experts believe the hike, though marginal, may add to operational expenses, especially for small and medium-scale enterprises.
While the government has not specified the reasons behind the hike, officials suggest that the move could be aimed at balancing the energy demand-supply equation and encouraging efficient energy consumption.
No Change for Households and Businesses
The unchanged tariff for domestic and commercial users is a welcome relief for households and shop owners, who were wary of a potential increase in electricity costs. The government’s decision ensures that general consumers are shielded from any financial strain amid rising inflation.
Mixed Reactions from Stakeholders
Industry leaders have expressed concerns over the increased cost burden, especially at a time when businesses are recovering from economic slowdowns. On the other hand, consumer rights groups have lauded the government for keeping residential and commercial electricity rates steady.
With Punjab’s economy largely dependent on its industrial sector, it remains to be seen how this revised tariff will impact the overall business landscape in the state.
