Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump Discuss Bilateral Relations in a Phone Call

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump spoke over the phone on Monday, reaffirming their commitment to a trusted and mutually beneficial partnership between the two nations. The conversation, which came just days after Trump’s inauguration for his second term, emphasized both countries’ shared goals of advancing global peace, prosperity, and security.

In a tweet, PM Modi said, “We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security.” PM Modi further stated that he is delighted to talk to President Trump and congratulate him on his historic second term.

The phone call also followed Modi’s earlier statement in which he expressed his eagerness to work closely with the Trump administration to further strengthen ties between India and the United States. He also highlighted the two nations’ shared vision for shaping a better future for the world.

It has been reported that Indian and US diplomats are vigorously working to confirm a meeting of PM Modi and President Trump, scheduled for Washington in February 2025. The two are expected to follow through on their dialogue on key matters of mutual concern, such as economic cooperation, defense, and regional security issues.

It is the latest chapter in the rising diplomatic relationship between India and the United States. The partnership between the two countries has gained considerable momentum in the last couple of years. President Trump had visited India during his previous term in February of 2020, and this year, in 2019, both the leaders held the highly publicized “Howdy Modi” rally in Houston, Texas, demonstrating their strong close personal and political relation.

During Trump’s inaugural function, S. Jaishankar represented Prime Minister Modi as his special envoy, carrying a letter from Modi to President Trump. The event also had Jaishankar seated in the front row, a gesture indicating the US’s interest in furthering the bilateral relationship.

Jaishankar confirmed that both nations are keen to continue prioritizing their strategic partnership by indicating discussions about taking the relationship forward are ongoing. “The Trump Administration has been clear in prioritizing its relationship with India,” Jaishankar remarked.

As the diplomatic efforts continue, the Modi-Trump relationship is likely to take a mighty role in playing in forming the global landscape to ensure continued cooperation between two of the world’s largest democracies.
