Lucknow Coaching Centre Fire Tragedy: 15 Students Killed in Aliganj Blaze, Probe Ordered by UP Government

A routine Monday afternoon in Lucknow turned into a scene of unimaginable horror when a massive fire ripped through a private coaching centre in the city’s Aliganj area, killing at least 15 students and leaving several others injured. The tragedy has sent shockwaves across Uttar Pradesh and reignited concerns about safety standards in educational institutions operating in densely populated urban neighborhoods.

The devastating blaze broke out around 3 p.m. in Sector-D of Aliganj, a busy locality where students regularly gather for coaching classes and library study sessions. Within minutes, thick smoke engulfed large portions of the building, trapping students who had little time to react as panic spread through the premises.

According to officials, the multi-storey structure housed a pet shop and a gaming zone on its lower floors, while the coaching centre and a library operated on the upper levels. As flames and smoke rapidly spread through the building, students rushed to find escape routes. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as young people attempted to flee the smoke-filled structure, with some reportedly jumping from the building in a desperate effort to save their lives.

The tragic consequences became clear as rescue teams transported victims to hospitals across the city. Dr. Amiya Agrawal, Medical Superintendent of the Trauma Centre at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), confirmed the scale of the disaster.

“A total of 21-22 students were brought here. Five of them sustained injuries and have been admitted. Two students who jumped from the building suffered back injuries; their CT scans have been conducted and they are undergoing treatment. Fifteen students were brought dead and will be sent to the mortuary for post-mortem examination,” he said.

The confirmation of multiple fatalities transformed what initially appeared to be a rescue operation into one of Lucknow’s deadliest educational institution disasters in recent years. Outside hospitals and the accident site, anxious parents and relatives gathered in large numbers, desperately seeking information about their children.

As emergency calls flooded local authorities, firefighters and rescue personnel rushed to the scene. Dense smoke significantly complicated rescue efforts, forcing teams to adopt unconventional methods to gain access to different parts of the structure. Officials broke through a wall on the first floor to enter areas where students were feared trapped. Rescue workers also attempted to reach inaccessible sections of the building from the rear side.

A large-scale emergency response quickly unfolded. Around a dozen fire tenders, along with a hydraulic platform and specialized rescue equipment, were deployed to combat the blaze and search for survivors. Police officers, district administration officials, medical teams, and fire personnel coordinated efforts throughout the afternoon and evening.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak arrived at the scene alongside senior officials, including Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sanjay Prasad and Director-General of Police Rajeev Krishna. Monitoring rescue operations firsthand, Pathak emphasized that authorities were focused on ensuring no one remained trapped inside the building.

“We have been informed that there is no one on the top floor now. Fire brigade personnel have broken a wall on the first floor to enter the building. There is heavy smoke inside. Every room is being searched. Our priority is to bring all the children out safely,” he said.

Meanwhile, ambulances remained stationed outside the building, while doctors and emergency medical teams stood ready to provide immediate treatment to those rescued. Hospitals across the city were placed on alert as authorities prepared for the possibility of additional casualties.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation late into the evening. Officials had yet to determine how the blaze originated or why it spread so rapidly through the building. Investigators are expected to examine whether fire safety violations, inadequate emergency exits, electrical faults, or other lapses contributed to the scale of the tragedy.

Following the incident, police evacuated neighboring buildings as a precautionary measure. Authorities also diverted traffic around the affected area to allow emergency vehicles and rescue teams unrestricted access. The operation continued for several hours as firefighters searched smoke-filled rooms and checked every section of the structure.

The tragedy prompted an immediate response from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was attending official engagements in Aligarh when reports of the fire emerged. Upon receiving updates, the chief minister directed officials to intensify rescue and relief efforts and ensure that injured students received the best possible medical care.

Expressing concern for the victims and their families, Adityanath ordered a formal inquiry into the incident. He also decided to cut short his engagements in Aligarh and return to Lucknow to monitor developments. A scheduled review meeting on development projects was postponed as the state administration shifted its attention toward managing the crisis.

Beyond the immediate loss of life, the incident has raised troubling questions about safety preparedness in private coaching centres, libraries, and commercial buildings that accommodate large numbers of students. Across India, coaching institutes have become an integral part of the educational landscape, attracting thousands of young people every day. However, several tragedies in recent years have exposed serious concerns regarding building safety, emergency evacuation plans, and adherence to fire regulations.

Safety experts argue that educational facilities operating in mixed-use commercial buildings often face unique challenges. Crowded classrooms, narrow staircases, inadequate ventilation, and insufficient emergency exits can turn a small fire into a deadly disaster within minutes. The Aliganj tragedy is likely to intensify demands for stricter inspections and enforcement of safety norms across educational institutions.
