Muktsar, Punjab – May 6, 2025: The farming community in Punjab’s Muktsar district is grappling with concern as Karnal bunt, a fungal disease, has been detected in freshly harvested wheat across several villages. Agricultural authorities have confirmed the presence of the disease in areas such as Gurusar, Madhir, Harike Kalan, and Kotli Sanghar, and samples have been sent to Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana for further testing.
What is Karnal Bunt?
Karnal bunt is a fungal disease caused by Tilletia indica that affects wheat crops. The disease leads to the partial blackening of wheat grains and gives them a characteristic fishy smell. Though not harmful to human health, its appearance and odour make the grain less desirable for milling and trade.
Grains Are Safe to Eat, Say Experts
In an official statement, Dr. Karanjit Singh Gillhttp://ptinews.com, Chief Agriculture Officer of Muktsar, clarified that while Karnal bunt has been spotted in 1-3% of grains in some heaps, the infected wheat is still safe for human and animal consumption after proper cleaning.
“The crop remained healthy through the season, and the disease surfaced only post-harvest. Most likely, it spread due to the absence of fungicide sprays. Though the grains are discoloured, they are not toxic,” Dr. Gill explained.
However, the Agriculture Department has issued a strict advisory to farmers not to use the affected wheat as seed for the next season to prevent further spread of the fungus.
Farmers Worry About Grain Rejection and MSP Loss
The timing of the outbreak has created unease among farmers as procurement agencies reportedly began rejecting blackened grains. Many fear they might not get the Minimum Support Price (MSP), leaving them at a financial loss.
Thana Singh, a farmer leader, warned,
“If the government does not procure the affected wheat at MSP, we will have no option but to protest. Farmers cannot be punished for a natural disease outbreak.”
Kuldeep Singh, another leader, raised questions about seed quality, claiming that the disease could have originated from substandard seeds. He urged farmers not to sell their wheat at throwaway prices and called for immediate government intervention.
Agriculture Minister’s Home District Under Spotlight
Interestingly, Muktsar is the home district of Punjab’s Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian. Farmers are hopeful that the government will act swiftly to safeguard their interests and ensure fair procurement practices.
What Should Farmers Do Now?
- Do Not Store infected wheat for sowing next season.
- Thoroughly Clean infected grains before consumption or sale.
- Report any signs of disease to local Agriculture Officers.
- Wait for official procurement guidelines before selling produce.
While the detection of Karnal bunt in parts of Muktsar has caused a stir, the situation is under control. Experts assure the public that the wheat remains safe to consume. However, fair treatment during procurement and guidance on future crop protection remain crucial.
The Agriculture Department’s swift action and PAU’s testing results will play a vital role in resolving the issue and preventing a wider spread in upcoming seasons.
