Hamilton, Canada – April 18, 2025: In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked both Indian and Canadian communities, a 21-year-old Indian student lost her life after being hit by a stray bullet during a shooting in Hamilton, Ontario.

The victim, Harsimrat Randhawa, was a student at Mohawk College and originally from India. She was waiting at a bus stop on her way to work when the tragic shooting unfolded.

According to Hamilton Police, the incident occurred around 7:30 PM at the intersection of Upper James and South Bend Road. Investigators confirmed that Randhawa was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire between two vehicles involved in a targeted shooting.

Caught in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time

Surveillance footage reviewed by the police shows that gunfire was exchanged between a black Mercedes SUV and a white sedan. The shooter, believed to be in the SUV, opened fire at the other vehicle. Unfortunately, a stray bullet hit Randhawa in the chest.

Emergency services rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

“According to us, Harsimrat was not part of any altercation. She was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said a Hamilton Police spokesperson.

Bullets Strike Nearby Home

In a disturbing detail, police also reported that stray bullets entered a nearby home on Allenby Avenue. Residents were watching television just feet away from where the bullets hit. Fortunately, no one else was injured.

Homicide Investigation Underway

Hamilton Police have launched a full-scale homicide investigation. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any dashcam or surveillance footage from the area between 7:15 PM and 7:45 PM on the night of the incident.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep sorrow and assured full support to the victim’s family.

“We are shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of life of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario. She was an innocent bystander killed by a stray bullet. We are in close touch with her family and are providing all requisite help,” the Consulate posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The senseless loss of a young, promising life has sent ripples of grief across borders. As investigations continue, the community mourns the passing of a hardworking student whose only fault was being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
