India Has Latent Episode Removed: The Indian government has blocked the controversial ‘India’s Got Latent‘ episode by Ranveer Allahbadia on YouTube over the alleged obscene content. Kanchan Gupta, Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, confirmed the action, mentioning perverse and inappropriate remarks in the episode.

Government Action and NHRC’s Intervention

Kanchan Gupta announced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), “The ‘India Has Latent’ episode on YouTube with obscene and perverse comments by Ranveer Allahbadia has been blocked following Government of India orders.”

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) also has landed its intervention in the matter. In a letter to YouTube’s Head of Public Policy, Mira Chatt, NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo urged immediate removal of the video. The commission emphasized in its letter, “The presence of such content on openly available platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook gravely endangers the safety, dignity, and mental peace of children, which includes women.”

The NHRC also ordered YouTube to hand over information regarding the channel and the videos in question to relevant authorities before taking it down.

FIR Registered Against Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina and Others

On 10 February, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed in X that an FIR had been registered against Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina, and Ashish Chanchlani for obscene remarks in the episode. In the same FIR, Apoorva Makhija and Jaspreet Singh who appeared in the video were also mentioned.

The aftermath of the controversy saw Guwahati Joint Police Commissioner Ankur Jain claim that the “strictest measures possible” would be taken against those responsible. Mumbai Police followed suit by sending a team to the ‘India’s Got Latent’ studio on February 10. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that necessary legal action would be taken.

Apology from Ranveer Allahbadia

Amid the mounting backlash and online trolling, Ranveer Allahbadia issued a public apology. In a video statement, he admitted his mistake, saying, “My comment was not appropriate, it wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I am just here to say sorry.”

The episode has reignited discussions on content regulation on digital platforms, raising many questions on the boundaries of free speech and responsible content creation. While some believe that there should be more stringent content moderation, others see it as an overreach by authorities. The government’s decision to block the episode underlines its commitment to maintaining content standards on widely accessible platforms.

As the case unfolds, further legal and regulatory actions against the individuals involved remain a possibility. The controversy surrounding ‘India’s Got Latent’ has undoubtedly become a significant talking point in India’s digital content landscape.
