Chandigarh on High Alert – A wave of heightened security has gripped the Union Territory of Chandigarh after a failed attempt by Pakistan to target the city following India’s strong retaliatory missile and drone strikes on terror camps in Pakistan, including Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) strongholds.

In response, the UT Administration, along with Punjab and Haryana governments, has stepped up its defence preparedness to counter any future threats. Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria is personally overseeing the emergency response operations across the city.
IAF Base, DRDO Labs Secured Amid Threat
Key defence installations in and around Chandigarh have been placed on the highest level of alert. Sources confirmed that the Mullanpur Air Force base, along with two crucial DRDO facilities — the Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) and the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) — are now under intense security surveillance.
Additionally, Mohali International Airport, under IAF control since Wednesday, remains shut with all civilian flights cancelled until further notice. The area is heavily fortified and inaccessible to the public.
Massive Security Build-up Across Tricity
With Chandigarh reportedly on Pakistan’s radar, a multi-layered security cordon has been deployed across the tricity. Inter-state coordination with Punjab and Haryana has been strengthened, with special security check-points (nakas) operational at all major entry and exit routes.
Law enforcement agencies are actively monitoring suspicious movements while conducting mock drills, patrols, and random searches at public places.
Emergency Drill at Sector 17 Plaza Supervised by Governor
One of the key highlights of Thursday’s developments was the civil defence mock drill conducted at the bustling Sector 17 Plaza. The exercise, aimed at testing the city’s emergency response mechanism, was closely monitored by Governor Kataria, who emphasized the need for “foolproof arrangements to prevent any terror strike in the joint capital.”
“The safety of our citizens is our top priority. We have taken all necessary steps to protect every vital installation and public space in Chandigarh,” the Governor said.
As a precautionary measure, the Chandigarh Education Department has ordered all schools to remain closed on Friday and Saturday, with anganwadis following suit. Mohali and Panchkula administrations have implemented similar closures, with schools in Panchkula to stay shut until Monday.
Panjab University has also postponed its scheduled examinations for May 9, 10, and 12, citing safety concerns.
Despite the heightened alert, officials reassured the public that the situation remains under control. “There is no need to panic. However, considering the evolving threat landscape and intelligence inputs, we have reinforced our preparedness and response systems,” said a senior UT official.
The administration has asked residents to remain calm but vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or emergency helpline.
The alert in Chandigarh marks a critical moment in India’s internal security strategy following increased cross-border tensions. With vital installations secured and public institutions shut as a safety measure, the city is preparing to respond to any threat with resilience and unity.
