The alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in West Bengal’s Baruipur has triggered widespread outrage, with political leaders, local residents, and the victim’s family demanding justice. Amid growing public concern, rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Saayoni Ghosh visited the bereaved family and called for a thorough and impartial investigation, describing the incident as more than an isolated crime and suggesting it could be linked to a much larger criminal network.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the victim’s relatives, Ghosh said the tragedy had deeply affected everyone and stressed that justice must not be delayed or compromised. She noted that the loss of a child leaves an emotional scar that extends beyond a single family, making it a matter of concern for society as a whole.
“I met with the entire family. When someone loses their life, when a child dies, we too feel the pain,” Ghosh said while expressing solidarity with the grieving family. She added that the public expects the state government to conduct a truthful, transparent, and comprehensive investigation that leaves no question unanswered.
According to Ghosh, the priority should be identifying every person connected to the crime rather than limiting the investigation to those immediately arrested. She said the available information suggests the case may involve a wider network, describing it as “a huge racket” that requires investigators to examine every possible angle. She argued that law enforcement agencies must go beyond surface-level findings and uncover whether organized criminal elements were involved.
The TMC leader also highlighted the broader issue of women’s safety, saying that the tragedy should become a turning point in strengthening protection for girls and women across the state. She maintained that justice in the present case should also contribute to preventing similar crimes in the future by exposing anyone responsible, regardless of their influence or position.
Referring to the response of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Ghosh said she expects the state leadership to ensure a fair investigation from start to finish. She stated that the Chief Minister has already assured the public that authorities will pursue every lead until the truth is established. According to Ghosh, such an assurance must now be matched by decisive action on the ground.
She further emphasized that crimes against women should never become subjects of political rivalry. In her remarks, Ghosh said that no elected government or Chief Minister, irrespective of political affiliation, would want incidents of rape to occur. Mentioning governments led by different political parties, she argued that the real test of leadership lies in how authorities respond after such crimes take place.
“The most important thing is how it is handled,” she said, insisting that the investigation should be professional, transparent, and free from interference. She also demanded the harshest possible punishment for every individual found guilty, including capital punishment if permitted under the law.
The incident has once again intensified the national conversation surrounding crimes against women and children. Cases involving sexual violence against minors often provoke widespread public anger and renewed calls for faster investigations, stronger prosecution, and improved policing. Civil society groups and child rights advocates have repeatedly argued that swift justice must be accompanied by preventive measures, better community awareness, and stronger institutional safeguards.
As the investigation progresses, attention is expected to remain focused on whether police uncover evidence supporting claims of a larger organized network behind the crime. Such findings could significantly alter the direction and scale of the investigation, potentially leading to further arrests and broader criminal proceedings.
For the victim’s family, however, the immediate demand remains unchanged. They continue to seek justice for the child they lost, while political leaders across the spectrum face increasing pressure to ensure that the investigation is transparent, accountable, and capable of restoring public confidence in the justice system.
The Baruipur case has emerged as one of the most closely watched criminal investigations in West Bengal, not only because of the brutality of the alleged crime but also because it has reignited concerns over women’s safety, institutional accountability, and the need for uncompromising action against those responsible. As investigators continue their work, the outcome of the case is likely to shape both public discourse and the state’s approach to handling crimes of this nature.
