Amritpal’s Family Under House Arrest: Tensions ran high in Punjab’s Jallupur Khera village as police put Waris Punjab De chief and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, under house arrest on Tuesday morning. The action comes amid speculations of a political announcement by Tarsem Singh during the upcoming Maghi Mela in Mohali.
Eyewitnesses say that a strong police contingent surrounded the village at night on Monday. At least 100 personnel have been stationed outside his residence by this morning. The house is cordoned from all sides as well, so no one can go in or come out of the premises.
Recently, Tarsem Singh, the father of Khalistani sympathizer Amritpal Singh, had declared his decision to form a new political party. According to sources, he had planned to do so at the Maghi Mela where Tarsem would declare the formation of the party and introduce its office-bearers under the banner of Koumi Insaf Morcha.
Balwinder Kaur, Amritpal’s mother, said she and her husband had planned to join the morcha in Mohali. But she claimed the police did not let them go out of their house. Tarsem Singh accused the Punjab Police of curtailing democratic rights and urged public support at the morcha site in Mohali.
SSP Amritsar Rural, Charanjit Singh, justified the heavy deployment and the decision to block the family. He said the preventive measures were taken to avoid unrest, referring to the fact that the family refused to oblige the police. “The action was necessary to maintain peace in the region,” he added.
The heavy police presence has created discomfort among the villagers of Jallupur Khera. Several villagers have been worried about the sudden deployment and questioned the approach of the state. “We woke up to find the entire village surrounded by police. It feels like we are under siege,” a resident said.
Despite the restrictions, Tarsem Singh appealed to supporters to gather in large numbers at the morcha in Mohali. The event, organized under the Koumi Insaf Morcha banner, aims to address various issues, including political representation and the rights of Punjabis.
The situation remains tense as police continue to monitor the area closely, while political observers speculate on the potential impact of Tarsem Singh’s thwarted plans.
It points out the complicated dynamics between political movements and law enforcement in Punjab, and during the debate, democratic rights stay in direct relation with public safety.
