Bengaluru, May 8, 2025: In a dramatic turn of events, Air India deboarded a passenger from Flight AI-2820 at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Wednesday evening due to security concerns. The flight, scheduled to depart for New Delhi at 6:05 PM, was halted before takeoff, creating a ripple of anxiety among passengers and staff alike.
The passenger was removed from the flight just prior to departure, raising questions about the nature of the security issue. An official from Air India clarified that such an action was not taken lightly and was a result of specific, undisclosed security concerns. “There must have been a reason for deboarding the passenger. It’s not something done routinely. There were specific concerns which we are not in a position to disclose,” said the Air India spokesperson, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
The incident is believed to be linked to the heightened security measures following India’s military operation against terrorist hideouts across Pakistan, dubbed Operation Sindoor. The airstrikes, which took place in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), were a direct response to the brutal killing of 26 people, including several tourists, in the Pahalgam area of Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, 2025.
Increased Airport Security Nationwide
In the wake of Operation Sindoor, airports nationwide, including Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, have ramped up security measures to ensure the safety of passengers. Security forces have heightened vigilance, and additional protocols are being followed at key locations. The recent deboarding incident reflects the increased sensitivity to security threats during this period of heightened tensions.
Passengers traveling from Bengaluru Airport were advised to check their flight status due to the ongoing airspace restrictions. A social media post from the airport clarified that some flights had been canceled due to these restrictions, urging passengers to stay updated with their airlines. The advisory noted, “We’re expecting an impact on some flights across our network due to airspace restrictions. All passengers are requested to check directly with their airline for the latest information.”
Impact of Airspace Restrictions
The ongoing security situation has had a significant impact on air travel across India. A series of airspace restrictions have led to canceled flights, delays, and increased passenger check-in times at major airports. Air India issued a notice cautioning passengers to verify the status of their flights before heading to the airport. This advisory is expected to be in place until the airspace restrictions are lifted.
Support for Armed Forces Personnel
In related news, Air India and Air India Express announced a special provision for defense personnel traveling during this time. In a gesture of support for the armed forces, both airlines are offering free rescheduling of tickets or full refunds on cancellations for defense personnel who hold bookings with the airlines.
“Given the current situation, we are offering full refunds for cancellations and a one-time waiver on rescheduling flights up to June 30, 2025, for those personnel with defense fares,” stated the airlines in a post on social media. This move reflects the airlines’ commitment to supporting the military in their ongoing efforts during this period of national security concerns.
The deboarding incident at Bengaluru Airport serves as a stark reminder of the heightened security protocols in place amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. While the reason for the passenger’s removal from Flight AI-2820 remains undisclosed, the situation underscores the importance of vigilance and preparedness in these challenging times. With heightened security across airports and airspace restrictions in place, passengers are urged to stay informed and cooperate with authorities to ensure smooth and safe travel.
