On Thursday afternoon, an Air India flight heading to London crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8, was carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew members. It tragically went down in a nearby medical college complex and caught fire, becoming one of India’s most serious aviation accidents in recent years.

Campbell Wilson, the CEO and Managing Director of Air India, addressed the incident in a heartfelt video message. He called it a “difficult day” for the entire airline and expressed deep sorrow over the loss. “Our focus right now is on supporting the passengers, the crew, their families, and everyone affected,” he said.
Air India confirmed that a special team of caregivers has been dispatched to Ahmedabad to help manage the situation and provide assistance on the ground. The airline is also working closely with emergency services and government agencies involved in the rescue and investigation efforts.
Of the 230 passengers on board, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were from the UK, seven from Portugal, and one from Canada. Local authorities quickly transported injured passengers to nearby hospitals. However, there are fears that most people on board may have died due to the severe impact and fire that followed.
CEO Campbell Wilson stated that while there are still many unanswered questions, the airline is fully cooperating with investigators. “We’ve set up a special helpline for families and friends who are concerned about their loved ones,” he added.
Emergency services, airline staff, and medical teams are working around the clock to support the victims and their families. Air India said it will continue to extend full support to authorities to understand exactly what caused the crash.
This tragic event has shocked the nation and the global aviation community. The coming days are expected to bring more clarity as investigations continue.
