India have unveiled a fresh-looking squad for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, signaling another step in the team’s ongoing transition while rewarding domestic and IPL performers who have impressed over the past year. The selectors have handed leadership responsibilities to Shreyas Iyer, while explosive batter Rinku Singh and pace sensation Mayank Yadav make their much-awaited return to the national setup.
The T20I series will begin on July 23 in Harare and offers India another opportunity to test emerging talent ahead of a packed international calendar. Although several familiar faces continue to feature, the squad also includes exciting new names that have earned recognition through consistent performances in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League.
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the squad announcement is the absence of Sanju Samson. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter has been left out alongside Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not offered any official explanation for the omission of these players, leaving room for speculation over workload management, rotation policies or selection preferences.
Rinku Singh’s comeback is among the most anticipated developments. Widely regarded as one of India’s most dependable finishers in the shortest format, Rinku returns after missing recent assignments and will be expected to strengthen India’s lower middle order. His ability to accelerate under pressure makes him one of the most valuable T20 batters in the country, and selectors will hope he can quickly regain his rhythm on the international stage.
Fast bowler Mayank Yadav also returns after a difficult period marked by injuries. The express pacer last played for India in 2024 before fitness concerns interrupted his progress. After missing a significant portion of IPL 2025 and making only a limited appearance during IPL 2026, Mayank gradually worked his way back through India A assignments. His inclusion suggests that the team management remains convinced about his long-term potential despite his recent lack of competitive cricket.
The selectors have also rewarded outstanding domestic performances by handing maiden India call-ups to Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur. Both pacers enjoyed exceptional Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaigns that caught the attention of the national selectors.
Yash Thakur finished with 18 wickets in only seven matches while maintaining an impressive average of 9.88 and an economy rate of just 6.80. Those numbers underlined his remarkable consistency and control in the shortest format. Ashok Sharma, meanwhile, announced himself during his debut IPL season with Gujarat Titans. He picked up six wickets in six appearances and generated headlines after delivering the fastest ball of the IPL season at 154.2 kmph. Both bowlers further strengthened their credentials during the recent India A tour of Sri Lanka.
Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh has also earned a well-deserved recall after producing back-to-back impressive IPL campaigns. Following a 579-run season in 2025, he continued his excellent form in IPL 2026 by scoring 510 runs from 14 matches at an average of 42.50 while striking at an explosive rate of 168.87. His aggressive batting style provides another dynamic option at the top of the order, although Ishan Kishan is expected to remain India’s first-choice wicketkeeper during the series.
Harsh Dubey is another player whose rise reflects India’s growing emphasis on rewarding consistent domestic performers. After making his ODI debut against Afghanistan earlier this year, the left-arm spinner has now received his maiden T20I call-up. His performances for Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he claimed eight wickets in eight matches during IPL 2026, demonstrated his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.
The batting unit features a healthy blend of established international players and emerging stars. Captain Shreyas Iyer will lead a side that includes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, vice-captain Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge and Rinku Singh. The bowling attack combines experience through Varun Chakaravarthy with youthful pace options including Prince Yadav, Ashok Sharma, Yash Thakur and Mayank Yadav, giving India multiple combinations to experiment with across the series.
The Zimbabwe tour represents more than just another bilateral assignment. It provides selectors with an opportunity to evaluate bench strength, identify future match-winners and build depth in India’s T20 setup ahead of major ICC tournaments. With senior players being rotated and younger cricketers receiving extended opportunities, performances in Harare could significantly influence future selections.
In a separate development, the selectors have named Shivam Dube as Nitish Reddy’s replacement for the upcoming ODI series against England. Reddy had already been ruled out of the T20I series after sustaining a quadriceps injury, and the all-rounder has failed to recover in time for the 50-over matches as well. Dube’s inclusion ensures India retain a powerful pace-bowling all-rounder capable of contributing in both departments.
India’s squad for the Zimbabwe T20I series includes Shreyas Iyer (captain), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Rinku Singh, Harsh Dubey, Varun Chakaravarthy, Prince Yadav, Yash Thakur, Ashok Sharma, Mayank Yadav and Prabhsimran Singh (wicketkeeper).
The three confirmed fixtures of the tour will be played in Harare, with the opening T20I scheduled for July 23, followed by matches on July 25 and July 26. As India continue building a squad that balances established stars with emerging talent, the Zimbabwe series could become an important chapter in shaping the team’s future in the shortest format.
