Chandigarh Police has filed a chargesheet against Panjab University professor BB Goyal in connection with the 2021 murder of his wife, Seema Goyal, marking a major breakthrough in a case that had remained unresolved for nearly four years.
Professor BB Goyal was arrested in December 2025 after investigators concluded that the death of his wife, Seema Goyal, was not the result of a robbery as initially claimed. Her body was found on the night of Diwali in November 2021 at the couple’s official university residence in Chandigarh. What appeared at first to be a case of housebreaking soon turned into a prolonged and complex murder investigation.
Seema Goyal was discovered with her hands and feet tied, and a cloth stuffed in her mouth. Preliminary medical findings indicated that she had been strangled. The disturbing condition of the body shocked the neighbourhood and raised immediate concerns among police officers who reached the scene.
Professor Goyal told investigators that he had been sleeping on the upper floor that night. According to his statement, he came downstairs in the morning and found his wife bound and unconscious, claiming that robbers had broken into the house and fled through a window. However, the version did not sit well with investigators from the beginning.
During a detailed forensic examination, police found that the iron window grills had been cut from the inside, contradicting the theory of an external break-in. Officers also noted the absence of significant theft, further weakening the robbery claim. These inconsistencies gradually shifted suspicion toward the professor.
Despite early doubts, the case proved difficult to crack. Over the next several years, Chandigarh Police conducted multiple rounds of questioning, forensic reviews, and technical analysis. A polygraph test was also carried out during the investigation. Officials said the case required careful reconstruction of events and close scrutiny of statements made over time.
Sources within the investigation revealed that fresh analysis and sustained interrogation ultimately led police to conclude that the crime scene had allegedly been staged to mislead authorities. Investigators believe that a false narrative was created to portray the murder as a robbery attempt gone wrong.
In December 2025, nearly four years after the incident, Professor Goyal was taken into custody. The filing of the chargesheet on March 3, 2026, formally places the evidence before the court and marks the beginning of the trial process. The document reportedly includes forensic findings, witness statements, and circumstantial evidence gathered during the lengthy probe.
Seema Goyal was the professor’s second wife. While police have not publicly disclosed details regarding motive, officials confirmed that domestic circumstances and personal factors were examined thoroughly during the investigation.
The case has deeply affected the academic community of Panjab University, where Professor Goyal had served for years. Colleagues and students expressed shock when the arrest was made, as the incident has cast a shadow over one of the city’s prominent educational institutions.
With the chargesheet now filed, the matter will proceed in court, where the prosecution will present its case and the defence will respond. After years of uncertainty and speculation, the legal process is finally set to determine accountability in a case that stunned Chandigarh on a night meant for celebration.
