Washington D.C. : Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in the United States to a warm welcome in cold weather, his first visit since President Donald Trump took office. The visit is going to be historic, with Modi meeting Trump for talks on critical issues including trade, defense cooperation, and deportation policies.

First Official Engagements

On arrival, PM Modi greeted Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence. On his social media post, Modi expressed his gratitude to Gabbard’s long support for Indo-US ties. The two leaders talked about intelligence collaboration, especially in counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, and strategic sharing of intelligence.

An official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) highlighted Modi’s warm recollection of past interactions with Gabbard. The meeting also covered regional and global security concerns, reaffirming both nations’ commitment to a secure, rules-based international order.

Key Agenda of Modi-Trump Meeting

The meeting between Trump and Modi that is about to take place will focus on key geopolitical and economic issues. Tariffs on trade imposed by the Trump government continue to be a point of contention, with the US President earlier denouncing India’s trade practices. Though India has already cut import taxes on a number of US exports, additional concessions are being negotiated.

Another source of urgency is the recent deportation of 104 Indian nationals, who were deported in handcuffs and shackles, evoking outrage in India. Modi is likely to express concern about their treatment and seek dignified repatriation procedures for future deportees.

Beyond trade and immigration, the leaders are set to discuss bolstering defense cooperation, a crucial aspect of the Indo-US partnership. The US views India as a key ally in countering China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. Modi’s visit aims to strengthen this partnership, aligning with broader US strategic interests.

A Historic Diplomatic Engagement

Modi’s visit also marks a diplomatic milestone, as he becomes the fourth world leader to meet Trump during his second presidential term. The three leaders who preceded him were Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and Jordan’s King Abdullah.

During his visit, Modi will stay at Blair House, which is the official guest house of the US President. His visit is likely to open up further cooperation between the two countries, building on the close personal chemistry that he and Trump have had in the past.

As India and the US go through difficulties in defense, trade, and diplomacy, this high-stakes summit is all designed to set the direction of bilateral relations for the foreseeable future.
