A welcome programme organised for Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai in Ayodhya has unexpectedly turned into a talking point after a video showing fish dishes being prepared and served at the event surfaced outside the gathering.
The programme was organised as a reception for Rai, with food arranged for guests and supporters. Among the dishes prepared for the feast was fish, a detail that later gained attention after someone recorded a video and circulated it beyond the venue.
What was meant to remain an ordinary community feast soon found itself at the centre of political discussion, particularly because the event took place in Ayodhya, a city that carries immense religious and political significance.
The controversy, however, did not fully unfold at the venue as heavy rain disrupted the programme and forced its cancellation. According to the account surrounding the event, the weather interruption prevented the gathering from continuing as planned, even as the video had already begun drawing attention.
Organiser Ramnihal Nishad has defended the decision to include fish in the menu and rejected the idea that the food served at the gathering should be treated as a controversy.
“Constitution humein bhojan ka adhikar deta hai aur machhli hamari parampara hai,” Nishad said, arguing that food choices are a matter of personal and community tradition.
His statement places the incident within a broader debate that often emerges around food, culture and political identity in India. While meals at political and social gatherings are usually seen as routine arrangements, the choice of food can quickly become a subject of public debate when it intersects with religion, regional customs or electoral politics.
In this case, the Nishad community’s cultural connection with fishing and fish consumption has also become part of the discussion. Ayodhya occupies a unique place in Uttar Pradesh politics and remains one of the country’s most closely watched political and religious centres. As a result, even relatively local events involving political leaders can attract wider attention.
Ajay Rai, who currently leads the Uttar Pradesh Congress, has been involved in efforts to strengthen the party’s political presence in the state. Public meetings, welcome programmes and interactions with local communities form an important part of such political outreach.
The feast was organised in that context, but the circulation of the fish dish video shifted attention away from the welcome event itself and towards the menu.
