Actor-turned-politician Vijay has made his electoral intentions clear. The founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Wednesday unveiled a series of welfare-focused promises ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, positioning himself as a strong challenger to the ruling establishment.

Addressing party functionaries in Thanjavur, Vijay blended emotion with political resolve. He described the election not as a routine democratic exercise, but as a deeply personal and emotional moment. With the 234-member Assembly polls likely to be held in April, his speech marked a decisive step in TVK’s campaign push.
The highlight of his announcement was a complete farm loan waiver for small and marginal farmers owning up to five acres of land. He said farmers have been burdened with debt for years and deserve immediate relief. By targeting this specific landholding category, Vijay appeared to focus on grassroots agrarian communities that form a significant voter base across the state.
He did not stop at loan relief. Vijay promised financial assistance for the education of farmers’ children, saying no child should be forced to discontinue studies because of economic hardship at home. He assured that a TVK government would design structured schemes to support students from farming families, ensuring continuity in school and higher education.
Fishermen’s safety was another major focus of his address. Referring to repeated incidents involving the Sri Lankan Navy, Vijay criticized what he called a lack of assertive action. He said merely writing letters to the Union Government was not enough and insisted that stronger emotional and diplomatic pressure must be applied. “The Sri Lankan Navy should not even lay a hand on our fishermen,” he declared, assuring coastal communities that their protection would be a top priority under a TVK government.
Vijay also promised time-bound governance. He said his administration would not just announce schemes for headlines but would ensure that every project is completed within five years. The statement was seen as an indirect criticism of the current regime, which he accused of failing to deliver fully on its commitments.
Without hesitation, Vijay framed the upcoming contest as a direct battle between TVK and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He positioned himself against Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, declaring that the real competition in Tamil Nadu politics is now between Vijay and Stalin. Calling the present administration a “model government only in name,” he predicted that the coming election would be historic.
The political backdrop adds weight to his claims. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the DMK secured 133 seats and led a broader alliance victory. Breaking into this well-established structure will be a significant challenge. Yet, Vijay’s growing popularity, especially among youth and first-time voters, has introduced a fresh dynamic into the state’s political landscape.
His speech also reflected his cinematic charisma. Referring to his film “Jananayagan,” he thanked supporters and said that while political opponents may attempt to silence him, they cannot silence “every Vijay in every household.” The remark highlighted his strategy of converting mass fandom into political momentum — a formula that has shaped Tamil Nadu politics in the past.

With promises of farm loan waivers, education support, fishermen’s protection, project completion within five years, and corruption-free governance, Vijay has laid down an ambitious agenda. Whether these commitments translate into electoral gains will depend on how effectively TVK converts enthusiasm into votes. As the state prepares for elections, one thing is clear — the battle for Tamil Nadu in 2026 has officially intensified.
