Taiwan Earthquake Live: A strong 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit southern Taiwan near the city of Chiayi early today, shaking buildings and disrupting daily life. According to Taiwan’s weather bureau, the quake struck at a depth of 9.4 km (6 miles), with its epicenter located in Dapu township.
The Tainan Science Park evacuated personnel from the buildings of the major tech facilities, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), after the tremor. TSMC also confirmed evacuation of staff in its central and southern factories.
The capital city of Taipei reports significant movement of buildings, hence the concern that there might be aftershocks. Emergency teams have been mobilized, with reports of structural damage in some places.
The fire department has said that three persons are reportedly stuck in a badly damaged building in Tainan, and rescue operations are ongoing. The local authorities are trying to ensure that no resident is at risk, with inspections going on in affected areas.
This earthquake is yet another reminder of Taiwan’s vulnerability to seismic activity because it lies near the junction of two major tectonic plates. In recent years, Taiwan has experienced several large quakes, including the deadly 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Hualien in April, which claimed 13 lives.
Past earthquakes and their tragedies have left a strong impact on the disaster preparedness of Taiwan. The 7.3-magnitude earthquake that hit southern Taiwan in 1999 resulted in more than 2,000 deaths and compelled major changes in building regulations and emergency response strategies. Today’s quake, though less severe, reminded Taiwan of the ongoing seismic challenges and the necessity of continued vigilance in disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
