Sukhu ka Samosa: In an unexpected twist, a missing samosa intended for Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has led to political uproar, internal investigations, and a wave of popularity for a local hotel’s snack offering. The CID’s ongoing inquiry into the misplaced snack has provoked criticism from the opposition, with BJP leaders decrying the probe as a misuse of government resources amid pressing state issues.
The unusual sequence of events began last month when a samosa order meant for CM Sukhu was mistakenly served to staffers at an official event. The slip-up resulted in the CID launching an internal investigation to determine how the error occurred and, according to CID Deputy General Sanjeev Ranjan Ojha, to address a related “misbehavior” issue. The Chief Minister’s office has maintained that the investigation is not about the missing snacks themselves, emphasizing that CM Sukhu, who “does not eat samosas,” had no personal involvement in the inquiry.
Despite these assurances, opposition BJP leaders seized upon the incident, labeling it an “embarrassing mismanagement” by the Congress-led government. “The state is grappling with real problems like unemployment, financial crisis, and delayed pension disbursements,” BJP MLA Ashish Sharma posted on Facebook. “Instead of addressing these, the government is ordering a CID probe over a few missing samosas. As a symbolic protest, I’ve sent 11 samosas to the Chief Minister to remind him of what matters.” Sharma’s gesture was backed by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers, who organized a “samosa march” through Shimla’s streets to voice their frustration.
The public’s reaction, however, took an unexpected turn as news spread that the now-famous samosas originated from the Radisson Hotel in Shimla. The hotel’s samosas have since become an unlikely tourist attraction, drawing visitors eager to sample the snack that triggered a political storm. “In 18 years as a chef, I’ve never seen our food become so popular overnight,” said Rajiv Bhardwaj, the hotel chef behind the snack, adding that this samosa has brought more attention than his Guinness World Record achievement for the largest khichdi, prepared in Tattapani in 2019.
The Radisson Hotel has embraced the spotlight, marketing the snack as “Sukhu ka Samosa,” a title that locals and tourists alike have latched onto. “It’s a mix of amusement and pride that a simple snack could attract so much attention,” Bhardwaj added.
While the CID continues its investigation, the strange saga of the “missing” samosas has become a humorous yet pointed symbol in Himachal Pradesh’s political landscape — raising questions about government priorities, sparking opposition criticism, and proving that sometimes, even a misplaced snack can leave a lasting impression.
