Popular Folk Singer and Padma Bhushan awardee #ShardaShinha passes away in AIIMS New Delhi.
The beloved folk singer Sharda Sinha, known as the “Voice of Bihar,” passed away on Tuesday evening at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The 72-year-old artist had been undergoing treatment in the ICU since her health began to deteriorate last month, and her condition required her to be placed on a ventilator this Monday. Despite the best efforts of her medical team, she took her last breath on Tuesday evening.
An Iconic Voice of Bihar Silenced
Sharda Sinha was celebrated nationwide for her contributions to Indian folk music, especially for her heartfelt renditions of Chhath songs that resonated deeply within the hearts of millions. A recipient of both the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards, she left an indelible mark on Indian music, bringing the cultural richness of Bihar’s folk traditions to a wider audience. Her passing, during the Chhath Mahaparv, has left her admirers in profound sorrow.
A Sudden Turn in Health
Sharda Sinha was admitted to AIIMS following a sudden decline in her health last month. Initially stabilized after intensive treatment, she had been moved to a private ward. However, her condition worsened significantly on Monday, requiring her to be put back on life support. Her son, Anshuman, kept well-wishers updated on her health, revealing that her sudden downturn was due to an infection. In a poignant moment on Monday morning, Anshuman observed a slight response when he tried to communicate with her, giving a glimmer of hope. However, by evening, her health had further deteriorated, and she passed away the next day.
A Wave of Mourning Among Her Admirers
Across social media, fans expressed their grief, reminiscing about how Sharda Sinha’s songs had become an inseparable part of their cultural celebrations. Her fans, friends, and family had hoped she would pull through, but fate had other plans. The timing of her departure during the Chhath Puja, a festival for which her songs have long been synonymous, added to the poignancy of her loss.
Personal Loss in Recent Times
The past year had been challenging for Sharda Sinha on the personal front as well, as her husband passed away recently after a battle with a brain hemorrhage. The couple had celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary earlier this year. Her family, already mourning the loss of her husband, now faces yet another heartbreaking farewell.
Sharda Sinha’s legacy, however, lives on. Her songs, especially those immortalizing the spirit of Chhath, will continue to echo in the hearts of her fans. Her voice will remain a part of the Indian cultural heritage, resonating with every note of Chhath Puja songs played across Bihar and beyond.
