Sarfaraz Khan has received another opportunity to strengthen his claim for a longer run in India’s Test setup after the BCCI named him as Sai Sudharsan’s replacement for the upcoming two-match Test series in Sri Lanka.
The call-up comes just days before India begin their campaign in Galle on August 15. Sarfaraz Khan will join the squad before the team travels to the venue for the opening Test, adding another middle-order option to a side led by Shubman Gill.
Sudharsan’s absence comes after he suffered a right toe stress reaction. The batter is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where the BCCI said he has made significant progress in his recovery. However, his condition has ruled him out of the Sri Lanka Tests, opening the door for Sarfaraz to return to the international stage.
For Sarfaraz, the selection represents more than a replacement call-up. The Mumbai batter has spent much of the past year trying to remain in contention for India despite limited opportunities at the highest level. His latest domestic campaign has once again provided evidence of his ability to score consistently in first-class cricket.
Sarfaraz Khan has played six Tests for India, with his most recent appearance coming during the 2024 home series against New Zealand. He now has a chance to re-enter the Test side at a time when India are preparing for an important overseas assignment.
