Sambhal Police Prohibits Friday Namaz on Roads

Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh – In a bid to ensure public safety and maintain law and order, the Sambhal Police have denied permission for offering Friday namaz on roads and rooftops ahead of ‘Alvida’—the last Friday of Ramzan. This decision comes in light of security concerns, particularly in the wake of past unrest in the region.

Ensuring a Peaceful Observance

Speaking to reporters, Sambhal Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shreesh Chandra stated that adequate security arrangements have been put in place under the sector and zone system to facilitate a peaceful observance of the prayers. While there are no restrictions on offering namaz inside mosques and Eidgahs, authorities have taken precautionary measures to prevent large gatherings on rooftops and roads, citing safety concerns.

The decision follows discussions during a peace committee meeting where concerns were raised regarding offering prayers on rooftops. ASP Chandra clarified that such gatherings pose a significant risk of accidents, and hence, they have been prohibited. Similarly, conducting prayers on roads has been restricted to prevent disruptions to traffic and public movement.

Maintaining Tradition While Prioritizing Safety

“There are no restrictions on offering namaz in the traditional way inside mosques and Eidgahs. The prayers will take place peacefully as per religious customs,” ASP Chandra reassured. He further added that mosques with small loudspeakers would be allowed to continue their regular practices without interference.

Authorities have reiterated that the prohibition on road prayers has been in place for several years and will remain unchanged this year as well. The move aims to strike a balance between religious freedom and public safety.

Background of Unrest in Sambhal

Sambhal has been on high alert since November 24 last year, when violence erupted in the city’s Kot Garvi locality during a survey of the Mughal-era Jama Masjid. The clashes resulted in the deaths of four people due to gunfire and left several, including police personnel, injured. Given the sensitive nature of the situation, the administration has taken extra precautions to prevent any untoward incidents during this crucial period.

Political Reactions and Legal Perspectives

Reports have surfaced indicating that Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Zia-ur-Rahman Barq may approach the Allahabad High Court to challenge the regulations concerning Friday prayers. Addressing this, ASP Chandra clarified that no one is being stopped from offering namaz in the traditional manner. However, he emphasized that unnecessary crowding on rooftops poses a safety hazard, and the administration will take all necessary steps to mitigate risks and maintain public order.

With security heightened and authorities on alert, the focus remains on ensuring that the ‘Alvida’ prayers are conducted peacefully while safeguarding public safety and harmony in the region. The police have urged citizens to cooperate with the guidelines and celebrate the occasion with responsibility and mutual respect.
