Punjab Bandh Today: In a show of solidarity with the farmers’ bandh call, transportation services across Punjab were heavily disrupted on Monday. Rail and road traffic came to a standstill, causing inconvenience to thousands of commuters in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh.
This led to the cancellation of 221 trains, where some major services like the Shatabdi Express and Vande Bharat Express were stopped. The strike aimed at bringing attention towards the demands made by the farmers which are to resume normal operation of transport services after 4 pm.
Rail Services face major disruptions
Massively affected are the railways, with a number of key routes having been hit:
- Vande Bharat Express: Two trains between New Delhi and Vaishno Devi, and one between New Delhi and Amb Andaura have been cancelled.
- Shatabdi Express: Services to Kalka, Chandigarh, and Amritsar have been hit among others.
- Partial Disruptions: Seven trains were partially cancelled, 14 were regulated, 13 were rescheduled, 15 were short-originated, and 22 short-terminated.
Road Transport Halts
Public and private bus services were also shut across Punjab.
- PRTC Services: Public bus services were suspended between 10 am and 2 pm.
- Private Operators: Private buses continued to suspended their services from 7 am to 4 pm. This means that total transport shutdown would be executed in the state.
Rail services were disrupted in the northern states and caused delays and cancellations for passengers. People who were traveling by bus found themselves stranded, and their options for alternative transport were minimal. Many commuters criticized the sudden stoppage while others supported the cause of farmers.
Protest Impact
The farmers’ bandh has once again highlighted the persistent unrest over agricultural issues in the region. Despite the inconvenience it caused, the protest did not turn violent. At different rail tracks and bus depots, farmers have staged sit-ins. The authorities advised passengers to confirm the train schedule and information before travel.
Services will resume from 4 pm today with some relief for the agitated passengers.
