Rameswaram, April 6, 2025 — In a landmark move aimed at enhancing spiritual tourism and coastal connectivity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the all-new Pamban bridge in Tamil Nadu. The bridge, a marvel of modern engineering, re-establishes the crucial rail link between Rameswaram Island and the mainland, bringing devotees, pilgrims, and tourists closer to one of India’s most sacred destinations.
The Prime Minister also flagged off a new Rameswaram–Tambaram (Chennai) train service, further strengthening the travel network in the region. In a symbolic gesture, a Coast Guard ship was flagged off under the bridge, showcasing the vertical lift functionality of this state-of-the-art structure.
A Historic Engineering Feat: India’s First Vertical Sea-Lift Bridge
The newly constructed Pamban Bridge is not just a lifeline but a historic accomplishment. Built at a cost of over ₹550 crore, the bridge spans 2.08 kilometers and features 99 spans along with a 72.5-metre-long vertical lift span. This section can be raised up to 17 metres, allowing large vessels to pass smoothly without disrupting train operations.
Designed with longevity and safety in mind, the bridge incorporates stainless steel reinforcement, fully welded joints, and high-grade polysiloxane paint for corrosion resistance, making it exceptionally durable in the challenging marine environment.
Strength Meets Vision: Built for the Future
Supporting its structure are 333 foundation piles and 101 piers/pile caps, engineered to accommodate dual railway tracks—a clear nod to future scalability. The bridge is a shining example of India’s infrastructure advancement that seamlessly merges tradition with cutting-edge technology.
Prime Minister Modi, while addressing the gathering, highlighted the importance of this project in “connecting hearts and faith.” He said, “This bridge is not just concrete and steel; it is a symbol of India’s resolve to preserve heritage while moving swiftly towards the future.”
Spiritual and Regional Impact
Rameswaram, one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, draws lakhs of devotees annually. The new bridge promises smoother, safer, and faster access for pilgrims from across India and the world, potentially transforming the region into a global spiritual tourism hotspot.
With enhanced rail connectivity through the new Rameswaram–Tambaram train and reduced transit bottlenecks, local businesses and tourism stakeholders anticipate a surge in visitors and economic activity.

The inauguration event saw the presence of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, and Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, who commended the bridge as a symbol of national integration and progress.
