Famous playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya found himself in a controversy after statements made during a December 2024 interview attracted national debate. The singer referred to Mahatma Gandhi as the “Father of the Nation for Pakistan.” The statement by the singer, who has several hit songs like “Chori Chori,” has drawn critical reactions and some legal repercussions for him.
In the interview, Abhijeet Bhattacharya compared the legendary music composer RD Burman with Mahatma Gandhi, stating, “Pancham Da [RD Burman] was bigger than Mahatma Gandhi, he was the Rashtrapita of music. Mahatma Gandhi was the Father of the Nation for Pakistan, not for India. India was always there. Pakistan was created. By mistake, Mahatma Gandhi was called the Father of Our Nation.”
Legal Notice and Apology Demand
Asim Sarode, a lawyer from Pune, sent a legal notice to Abhijeet Bhattacharya on behalf of his client, Manish Deshpande. The notice demanded an apology from the singer in public for his remarks, which he said were defamatory and had tarnished the global image of Mahatma Gandhi.
Sarode claimed, “India is known and recognized all over the world as a nation belonging to Mahatma Gandhi. Such observations hurt the dignity of Mahatma Gandhi and scandalize him.” The notice also mentioned that if an apology was not given, there would be criminal prosecution.
Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s comments triggered strong reactions on the social media. Although some netizens supported his right to express, others condemned him for being too rude. One user said, “He is always straightforward. I support such guys who don’t foot-polish anyone.” Another commented, “Abhijit sir has his own guts.” But, not all people reacted positively towards the interview and a third person called it “What a worm interview
A Divisive Statement
Bhattacharya’s statement has polarized public opinion, with some viewing it as a bold expression of his beliefs, while others see it as an unnecessary affront to a revered historical figure. The controversy continues to stir debate over freedom of speech and the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
Till now, Bhattacharya has not made any public response to the legal notice or the growing outrage over his remarks. Whether he will apologize or face legal consequences is yet to be seen.
