The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has added a touch of star power to Bihar’s political landscape by nominating Bhojpuri superstar Pawan Singh for the upcoming Bihar Legislative Council elections. The announcement, made as part of the party’s candidate list for the biennial MLC polls, has immediately become one of the most talked-about political developments in the state, bringing together the worlds of entertainment and politics once again.
Pawan Singh, one of the most recognizable faces in the Bhojpuri film and music industry, has enjoyed immense popularity across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and several Hindi-speaking regions. While his name has surfaced in political discussions on multiple occasions during Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and Assembly election seasons, this is a significant moment in his political journey as the BJP has officially entrusted him with a ticket for the Bihar Legislative Council elections.
Alongside Pawan Singh, the BJP has announced the candidature of Sanjay Mayukh, Anil Kumar Thakur, and Sheila Pandit. The selection reflects the party’s attempt to balance political experience, organizational strength, social representation, and public appeal ahead of the crucial election.
The Bihar Legislative Council elections for nine seats are scheduled to take place on June 18. Given the current political arithmetic in the 243-member Bihar Assembly, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) appears to be in a comfortable position. Political observers point out that approximately 25 MLAs are required to secure victory on a single seat, and with around 202 legislators backing the NDA, the alliance is expected to perform strongly in the contest.
Among the candidates, Sanjay Mayukh’s renomination highlights the BJP leadership’s confidence in his political experience and organizational contributions. Currently serving as a member of the Bihar Legislative Council, Mayukh has also played a prominent role at the national level as BJP’s national spokesperson and national media co-in-charge. Party leaders believe his understanding of both governance and communication makes him an important asset in Bihar’s political framework.
Anil Kumar Thakur’s nomination is being viewed through the lens of social representation and grassroots organizational work. A senior BJP leader and current state vice-president, Thakur belongs to the Nai community and has remained actively involved in strengthening the party’s presence across various sections of society. His inclusion reflects the BJP’s continuing strategy of broadening its social outreach while rewarding committed organizational leaders.
The fourth candidate on the BJP list, Sheila Pandit, represents the party’s emphasis on women’s participation in politics and public life. Known for her social work and organizational involvement, Pandit currently serves as a member of the Bihar State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Her nomination is expected to strengthen the BJP’s message on women’s leadership and social welfare initiatives.
Soon after the announcement, senior BJP leaders congratulated the candidates and expressed confidence in their victory. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary took to social media to extend his best wishes to all the BJP nominees, stating that the party’s chosen candidates would contribute significantly to the state’s political and developmental journey.
State BJP president Sanjay Saraogi also congratulated the candidates, describing them as capable leaders who have consistently worked for the organization and society. He expressed hope that the party would register a strong performance in the Legislative Council elections.
However, it is Pawan Singh’s entry that has generated the maximum buzz across political circles and social media platforms. Known for chart-topping Bhojpuri songs and blockbuster films, Singh commands a massive fan following, particularly among young voters and rural audiences. His nomination is being seen as a strategic move by the BJP to connect with a wider section of the electorate while leveraging his popularity beyond traditional political boundaries.
Political analysts believe the BJP’s candidate list reflects a carefully crafted strategy that combines experience, social balance, women’s representation, and mass appeal. By fielding leaders with organizational backgrounds alongside a celebrity figure like Pawan Singh, the party appears to be signaling its intent to strengthen both its political base and public outreach in Bihar.
