Old Delhi Markets To Remain Closed on April 25

New Delhi, April 23 – In the heart of the national capital, a powerful message of grief and unity will echo through the narrow lanes of Old Delhi on April 25, as all major markets are set to remain shut. The move comes as a collective protest against the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that left at least 28 dead, including foreign nationals, and injured dozens more.

The decision to close shops was unanimously taken during an emergency meeting of local traders’ associations in Chandni Chowk, one of Delhi’s oldest and busiest commercial hubs. According to the organizers, the shutdown is not just a protest but a heartfelt tribute to the innocent lives lost in the gruesome attack.

“We cannot remain silent when our fellow countrymen and tourists are brutally targeted. This is not just about business, it’s about humanity,” said Rajeev Gupta, President of the Chandni Chowk Vyapar Mandal.

Candlelight Marches & Condolence Meets Planned

To further express their solidarity with the victims and their families, traders and local residents will participate in multiple candlelight marches across Old Delhi, including areas like Sadar Bazaar, Chawri Bazaar, and Dariba Kalan. A condolence meeting is also scheduled in the evening to honor the memory of those who lost their lives.

Visuals of traders holding placards and lighting candles are expected to send a strong message across the nation — one of unity against terror.

Security on High Alert in Delhi

In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, Delhi has been placed on high alert. Authorities have increased patrolling and surveillance at major public spots including Connaught Place, India Gate, and popular tourist destinations.

According to officials, multiple teams of Delhi Police and paramilitary forces are monitoring crowded areas to prevent any untoward incident.

Background: Pahalgam Terror Attack

The attack, which took place on Tuesday in the Baisaran Meadows near Pahalgam — a scenic location popular for horseback riding — saw gunmen dressed in military fatigues open indiscriminate fire on a group of tourists. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the massacre.

Eyewitnesses described the horror as tourists, including children and elderly people, scrambled for safety amid the chaos. This is being called one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in the region in recent years.

Traders Urge Government for Stern Action

The Delhi traders are now urging the central government to take “strong and decisive” action against terror outfits operating across the border. Many believe that India must re-evaluate its counter-terrorism strategy to prevent such heinous crimes in the future.

A City United in Grief and Protest

As Old Delhi goes silent on April 25, the protest will serve as a reminder that terror cannot silence the spirit of unity. From shopkeepers to daily commuters, the city is standing together — not just in grief, but in resilience.
