Nike Inc has suspended online sales in Turkey through its website and mobile app, following an increase in customs taxes on international online purchases.
In a statement on its official Turkish site, Nike explained, “We cannot ensure that orders will be delivered smoothly and on time, so we are pausing online orders from Turkey for now.”
The company added, “We are still assessing how the recent changes in Turkey’s customs regulations affect the shopping experience for Turkish consumers.”
Although Nike did not specify the exact changes leading to its decision, a new Turkish regulation this week lowered the tax exemption threshold for online purchases to 30 euros ($33) from 150 euros. Additionally, the tax rate has been increased to 30% from 20% for items purchased from the European Union and to 60% from 30% for items bought from other countries.
Nike will still offer its products in Turkey through its own stores and those of its retail partners.
According to Trade Minister Omer Bolat, the new customs measures were introduced to mitigate “negative effects” on market share and employment, including for store owners and small to medium enterprises, as well as to address a loss of foreign currency. This information was reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency.
