Renato Subotic US jail visa error: Renato Subotic, Australian MMA coach, arrested in the US over a visa error, alleges harsh treatment in federal prison. He plans legal action over traumatic experience.

Sydney/Washington D.C., April 7, 2025: Renato Subotic, head coach of the Australian National MMA Team, was detained and jailed in a U.S. federal prison for 24 hours after a visa technicality led to his arrest at the border. The incident, which Subotic described as a “nightmare,” has triggered a wave of concern on social media over immigration enforcement and the treatment of international visitors.
Who is Renato Subotic?
Renato Subotic is a well-known figure in the international MMA community and serves as the head coach of Australia’s National Mixed Martial Arts team. He arrived in the U.S. to conduct a pre-scheduled seminar when he was suddenly stopped by immigration officers at the airport.
Arrested at the Border
In a detailed Instagram post titled “From Seminar to Cell,” Subotic shared that he was pulled aside by immigration officials upon arrival. He claims that he was interrogated for hours despite providing full details of his visit.
“They said there was a mistake in my visa. Before I knew it, I was handcuffed and taken to a federal prison — no clear explanation, no phone call, no rights,” he wrote.
Life Inside Federal Prison
Subotic described the federal facility as chaotic and violent. He said he was stripped, searched, fingerprinted, and locked inside a cell with a filthy mattress “stained with blood and urine.” The Australian coach added that he witnessed brutal fights and even got into an altercation himself when two inmates tried to steal his blanket.
“They threw me into a cell like I was a terrorist,” he said. “I just came here to teach martial arts. And they treated me like the worst criminal.”
A Visa Error or Excessive Force?
According to Subotic, the root cause was a small administrative error in his visa application — possibly a missing detail — which he believes could have been resolved without such extreme action.
“I respect immigration laws. But jailing someone over a paperwork error? That’s not just,” he said.
Subotic now plans to take legal action against the U.S. authorities, stating that the trauma he experienced should not happen to anyone else.
Public Reaction and Legal Outlook
His post quickly went viral, sparking outrage among MMA fans, athletes, and human rights advocates. Many are calling for an investigation into how foreign nationals are treated by U.S. immigration when minor visa discrepancies occur.
Subotic concluded his statement with a message of caution to other travelers and said he is consulting with lawyers back in Australia.
“Something needs to change. This system is broken.”
