A social media post by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, which paid tributes to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary, ignited a political storm. The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Trinamool Congress criticized Gandhi for stating that Netaji died on August 18, 1945, which has been an item of controversy since long in history.
In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi wrote, “Heartfelt tribute to the great revolutionary, founder of Azad Hind Fauj, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary. Netaji’s leadership, courage, struggle for social justice, his contribution towards tolerance and inclusion continue to inspire every Indian even today. My respectful salute to the immortal son of Mother India, Jai Hind! However, his statement referring to Netaji’s date of death angered politicians across party lines.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said the post was “totally unacceptable” and said the theory that Netaji had died in a crash was an “absolute nonsense.”. “The post of Rahul Gandhi is wrong and is not acceptable. We are celebrating the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. We don’t know whether the theory regarding the air crash accident of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is correct or not.
The date of death that Rahul Gandhi has mentioned is wrong, he should correct it,” Ghosh said. This resulted in the BJP demanding an apology over Gandhi’s tweet, with a Union minister and BJP leader demanding an apology from Rahul Gandhi within 24 hours.
“I strongly protest the claim that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose died on August 18, 1945, as stated in social media posts by Rahul Gandhi.”. I also demand that Rahul Gandhi apologise within the next 24 hours for showing disrespect to Netaji, who was the first Prime Minister of India,” Majumdar stated. The issue has rekindled the long-standing controversy surrounding Netaji’s mysterious disappearance and the lack of a definitive conclusion about his death. Many historians and political leaders have disputed the air crash theory, with some believing that Netaji survived and continued his efforts for India’s freedom in secrecy. Neither Rahul Gandhi nor the Congress party has said anything about it.
With both BJP and TMC leaders now demanding a correction and apology from the Congress leader, the entire episode has yet again escalated the political temperature concerning the legacy of one of India’s most iconic freedom fighters.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, one of the tallest figures in India’s freedom struggle, continues to evoke deep respect and admiration across the political spectrum. However, his mysterious death remains a sensitive topic, with many Indians still awaiting closure on the subject.
