A frightening ordeal unfolded for former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly’s elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly, and his wife Arpita, when their speedboat capsized while they were enjoying water sports off the coast of Puri. The incident took place on Saturday evening near the Lighthouse area, turning a leisure outing into a near-tragic experience.

According to police reports, the couple was on a speedboat ride when a massive wave suddenly hit their vessel, causing it to lose balance and overturn in the deep sea. Both Snehasish and Arpita were thrown into the water, struggling against the powerful currents.
In a video message shared with PTI, Arpita recounted the terrifying moment. “We were saved by the grace of God. I am still in trauma. This should not happen, and water sports in the sea must be properly regulated. I will write to the Puri SP and the Odisha Chief Minister after returning to Kolkata,” she said. Her words reflected not only relief but also concern over the safety measures in place for such activities.
Thanks to the swift and courageous response of the local lifeguards, both were rescued before the situation could escalate further. Eyewitnesses nearby reported seeing the speedboat capsize immediately after the wave struck, highlighting the unpredictable dangers that come with sea sports.
This incident serves as a strong reminder of the need for stricter safety protocols and supervision to prevent similar accidents in popular tourist destinations. While water sports offer thrill and adventure, ensuring the safety of participants must always be the top priority.
