Playback singer Monali Thakur, who has had hits like “Sawaar Loon” and “Moh Moh Ke Dhaage” to her credit, was seen walking off the stage midway into her concert at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, on December 22, 2024. Fans were in a state of confusion, but now, the singer has narrated the frightening experience, spilling shocking details about the trauma that befell her.
On January 6, 2025, Monali Thakur revealed the reasons behind her sudden exit in a heartfelt note. She described the concert as “horrific and negative” and went on to explain how poor event management, false accusations, and life-threatening intimidation led her to leave the stage, putting both herself and her team in danger.
Monali Thakur detailed the lack of basic safety measures and the fact that her team was a sufferer of heavy negligence in relation to infrastructural safety. She added that they were also falsely accused of harassment that made things worse. “My team and I were subjected to severe negligence, false accusations of harassment, and life-threatening intimidation,” she wrote to reflect on the seriousness of the incident.
The singer was vocal on how the organizers misused sexual harassment laws, saying it was a “gross abuse of rights.” She noted that such actions did not only undermine the credibility of genuine survivors but also damaged the efforts to fight against sexual harassment. “It is particularly disheartening to see young women participating in such actions, as it damages the cause and creates distrust around an issue that should always be treated with the utmost seriousness,” she stated.
Along with the personal pain, Monali Thakur severely criticized the unethical practices of the event organizers. She strongly condemned the poor treatment of backstage crew, artist managers, and vendors and urged the need for stricter regulations that would protect the artists and the crew members. “It is absolutely unacceptable to treat vendors poorly, cheat them of their hard-earned money, or con them in any way,” she wrote.
Monali Thakur said in her message that everything at such events, from the artists to the crew members and vendors involved, should have a safe and professional atmosphere. Reforms need to be made immediately so that exploitation and such mistreatment could be dealt with systematically and fairly.
Amid all this, Monali Thakur expressed gratitude to the Uttar Pradesh Police and the Varanasi Police Department for acting very promptly in managing the situation. She also extended her gratitude to her fans who have always remained with her throughout this tough time by believing in and loving her continuously.
Reflecting on the incident, Monali Thakur concluded her statement by saying that she had hoped not to end 2024 or begin the new year 2025 by addressing this, but emphasized the importance of sharing these truths. “I had hoped not to end 2024 or begin the new year 2025 by addressing this, but I feel it is important to raise awareness and call for reforms in how such matters are handled,” she said.
Monali’s courageous stance in shedding light on the unethical practices and unsafe conditions faced by artists at public events serves as a stark reminder of the need for better management and accountability in the entertainment industry. Fans and fellow artists alike have expressed solidarity, advocating for change and greater protection for performers in the future.
