Mahakumbh Stampede Update Live: After the tragic stampede on Mauni Amavasya (January 29), the Uttar Pradesh government has stepped up efforts to improve crowd management and ensure the safety of lakhs of devotees visiting the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
Despite the unfortunate incident, lakhs of devotees braved dense fog and early morning cold to take a holy dip at the Sangam. According to the Uttar Pradesh Information Department, by 8 am on Thursday, over 45.11 lakh pilgrims had arrived at the Mahakumbh, with over 10 lakh Kalpvasis present at the Sangam. The total number of devotees who took the holy dip was over 55.11 lakh.
UP govt bans VVIP passes
To prevent crowding and enhance security measures, the Uttar Pradesh government has cancelled the special VVIP passes that allowed vehicles to enter restricted areas. The decision, announced on Thursday, comes as part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure seamless movement and prevent further accidents.
CM Yogi Adityanath closely monitoring situation
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is actively monitoring the situation, coordinating efforts from a dedicated war room set up for the event. He is expected to visit the Maha Kumbh site to review the arrangements and hold meetings with officials to assess the implementation of improved security protocols.
Madhya Pradesh CM issues security instructions
In the wake of the incident, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has directed the Chief Secretary and the Commissioner of Rewa Division to strengthen security measures along the MP-UP border. The directive is aimed at ensuring smooth movement for devotees travelling to the Maha Kumbh from Madhya Pradesh.
Security and crowd management measures enhanced
A large number of security personnel have been deployed to control the flow of pilgrims and prevent overcrowding at key locations. Authorities are using drones and CCTV surveillance to monitor high-density areas. Additional barricades have been put up at entry and exit points, while medical teams are on high alert to provide immediate assistance if needed.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, known as one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, continues to attract millions of devotees despite the recent tragedy. The UP government is cautious, urging pilgrims to follow safety guidelines to ensure a smooth and safe experience for all.
