Prayagraj, 29 Jan: At least 17 pilgrims have been reportedly killed in a deadly stampede today at the Mahakumbh 2025 in the Sangam region of Prayagraj on Wednesday. Following this incident, chief minister Yogi Adityanath said the administration is managing to control the situation but asked pilgrims to not disperse themselves since the instructions provided by the officials are already helping to check another chaos here.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively monitoring the situation and spoke to CM Yogi Adityanath twice within an hour. He has directed authorities to ensure immediate relief measures and extend necessary support to affected families. Additionally, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also reached out to the chief minister, assuring full cooperation from the central government in handling the crisis.

Mahakumbh-2025, Prayagraj, dear devotees, please take your holy bath at the ghat nearest to you and do not attempt to go towards the Sangam Nose. Kindly follow all the instructions given by the administration and cooperate in maintaining order,” CM Yogi posted.
The chief minister further said that Mauni Amavasya’s auspicious bathing period will continue till late at night, ensuring ample time for devotees to perform their rituals safely.
Stampede Triggers Akhara to Call Off Holy Dip
The disaster happened on the eve of the second Amrit Snan of the day on Mauni Amavasya-the greatest congregation of all times when lakhs of pilgrims throng to take holy dips. For this reason, many Akharas have chosen to cancel the scheduled dips at the sacred rivers today, instead ensuring the devotees’ safety.
Niranjani Akhara Chief Kailashanand Giri Maharaj said, “Saints always work for the welfare of the people. So, all Akharas have collectively decided to abstain from taking the ritualistic dip.”.
We must not forget to remember the people’s problems today. In traditions, the Indians always pray for the well-being and work for their welfare. Heeding to all that, today all the akharas had agreed to desist from holy dippings today,” said Kailashanand Giri Maharaj.
The Parishad has also appealed to the devotees to plan their visit on Vasant Panchami, February 3, since another holy dip is scheduled.
The authorities response was swift, and it moved the injured devotees to the medical facility in Sector 2 of the Mela area. It has further enhanced security arrangements and appealed to the visitors to cooperate with the officials to avoid such incidents.
As the Maha Kumbh continues, the officials are put on high alert to ensure safety and smooth management of the world’s largest religious gathering.
