Kangana Ranaut electricity bill controversy: The ongoing electricity bill controversy involving Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has taken a sharp political turn. After accusing the Himachal Pradesh government of issuing “inflated electricity bills”, state PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh hit back, alleging that Ranaut deliberately avoids paying her dues and then blames the government.
What Sparked the Controversy?
While addressing a public meeting in Mandi — her Lok Sabha constituency — Kangana Ranaut claimed she received an electricity bill of nearly ₹1 lakh for her Manali residence. “I don’t even live there regularly. Still, I received a bill of ₹1 lakh for one month. What is going on? Am I running a factory?” she questioned, as a video of the statement went viral on social media.
Her remarks sparked a political storm, prompting the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) to issue a clarification.
HPSEBL Responds with Facts
On Wednesday, HPSEBL revealed that the total outstanding amount of ₹90,384 covered the months of January and February. It also included previous dues of ₹32,287. The electricity board clarified that the connection registered in Kangana’s name had a connected load of 94.82 KW, which is 15 times more than a normal household.
“She did not pay her bills from October to December on time,” the official statement noted, directly countering Kangana’s claims.
Minister Vikramaditya Singh Hits Back
Not one to stay silent, PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh took to Facebook, firing back at the MP. In a scathing post written in Hindi, Singh said:
“Mohtarma badi shararat karti hai, bijli ka bill nahin bharti hai, phir manch par sarkar ko kosti hai, aisa kaisa chalega?”
(Translation: Madam plays mischief. She doesn’t pay her electricity bills and then criticizes the government from the stage. How will this work?)
Singh, the son of former CM Virbhadra Singh and Congress state chief Pratibha Singh, also pointed out that Ranaut’s Manali home consumes electricity far beyond the usual residential usage, implying that the high bills are justified.
Kangana’s Sharp Reply
Refusing to back down, Kangana responded on Thursday during an event in Sarkaghat, Mandi. “If Vikramaditya Singh is Raja Babu, then I am also a Queen,” she said, referencing her popular film Queen. She further argued that her bills used to be around ₹5,000 and now have suddenly ballooned to ₹80,000-₹1,00,000. “Is this how you treat the people who want to serve Himachal?” she asked rhetorically.
The Bigger Picture
The heated exchange between Kangana Ranaut and Vikramaditya Singh reflects the high-stakes political atmosphere in Himachal Pradesh ahead of the upcoming general elections. As a first-time MP from Mandi and a national celebrity, Ranaut’s comments carry significant weight, but so do the government’s rebuttals backed by official records.
With both parties sticking to their versions, the truth may lie somewhere in between — in the kilowatts consumed and the political voltage it has sparked.
