Ramban/Jammu – April 20, 2025: In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district was battered by relentless rain, cloudbursts, and flash floods in the early hours of Sunday, claiming three lives and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. More than 100 villagers, trapped amid gushing water and landslides, were miraculously rescued in heroic efforts by local police and emergency services.
The cloudburst that struck Seri Bagna village proved deadly, sweeping away lives and livelihoods alike. Among the deceased were two brothers, Aqib Ahmad and Mohd Saqib — a tragedy that has plunged their family and community into mourning. The third victim’s identity is yet to be confirmed, even as rescue teams continue their tireless operations.

The heavy downpour also caused massive landslides and mudslides across a dozen locations between Nashri and Banihal along the vital Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, forcing authorities to suspend traffic indefinitely. The highway — the lifeline connecting Kashmir with the rest of India — now lies choked under debris, with stranded vehicles and helpless commuters dotting its length.
According to district officials, over 40 homes were damaged in Dharam Kund village alone, 10 of them reduced to rubble. Residents, many of whom escaped with nothing but the clothes on their backs, watched in horror as flash floods swept away their homes, livestock, and belongings.
“We’ve never seen anything like this,” said a local villager, his voice shaking. “The water came down the mountains like a wall. We barely managed to escape.”
Adding to the devastation, two people, including a woman, were struck and killed by lightning in Reasi’s Arnas area on Saturday evening, pushing the rain-related death toll in Jammu region to five in just 48 hours.
Despite the relentless downpour and dangerous conditions, local police and rescue teams displayed extraordinary courage, rescuing over 100 villagers from vulnerable spots. Several vehicles were washed away by overflowing streams, and multiple families remain displaced.
“We are currently focusing on saving lives and providing immediate relief,” said a senior official from the district administration. “Damage assessment will follow, but right now, our priority is to ensure everyone is safe.”
The havoc led to the closure of the entire 250-km highway, with hundreds of commuters stranded. In one instance, a major stretch near Panthiyal was completely washed away. Fortunately, all travelers were evacuated to safer zones by evening.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Union Minister and Udhampur MP Dr. Jitendra Singh lauded the swift response of the administration led by Deputy Commissioner Baseer-ul-Haq Chaudhary. “The timely action helped save many lives. I’m in constant touch with the DC. Relief is being extended and more aid is on standby if needed,” he wrote.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is expected to chair a high-level meeting later today to review the situation and mobilize state machinery for relief and rehabilitation.
The people of Ramban now face a long road to recovery. Homes must be rebuilt, roads cleared, and lives pieced back together. Yet amid the destruction, stories of bravery, solidarity, and hope continue to emerge — a reminder of the resilience that defines the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
