Patna: Political uncertainty has gripped Bihar as speculation intensifies over whether Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is preparing to step down and enter the Rajya Sabha. With nomination deadlines just days away and high-level meetings underway within his party, the developments have triggered a fresh round of debate about the future leadership of the state.

Sources indicate that a crucial meeting of the Janata Dal (United) is currently in progress in Patna. Senior leaders, including Sanjay Jha and Rajiv Ranjan Singh, are said to be discussing electoral strategy and possible leadership adjustments. Though no formal announcement has been made, political observers believe the Rajya Sabha nominations may reveal Nitish Kumar’s next move.
Elections to five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar are scheduled, with the notification already issued. The last date for filing nominations is March 5, scrutiny will take place on March 6, and candidates can withdraw their names until March 9. If Nitish Kumar files his nomination before the deadline, it would confirm a major transition from state leadership to national parliamentary politics.
Adding another layer to the speculation are reports suggesting that his son, Nishant Kumar, may also be fielded on a JD(U) ticket. Such a move would mark Nishant’s formal entry into active politics and potentially signal a generational shift within the party. While some reports even claim he could assume a larger administrative role in the state, these claims remain unverified.
The political arithmetic further complicates the situation. The Bharatiya Janata Party currently stands as the single-largest party in the Bihar Assembly. In the 2025 Assembly elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a commanding 202 out of 243 seats. The BJP itself won 89 seats, while JD(U) secured 85. Despite the BJP’s numerical edge, Nitish Kumar took oath as Chief Minister for a record tenth time, underlining his continuing influence in the coalition.
If Nitish Kumar decides to move to the Rajya Sabha, several political scenarios could unfold. The BJP may stake a stronger claim to the Chief Minister’s post, given its position as the largest party in the Assembly. Alternatively, JD(U) could attempt to retain the leadership by projecting a new face from within its ranks. A third possibility is that Nitish Kumar aims to play a more strategic national role in Parliament, particularly as coalition politics continues to evolve at the Centre.
At 75, Nitish Kumar remains one of Bihar’s most enduring political figures. He has shaped the state’s governance narrative for over a decade and has held the Chief Minister’s office for most of the period since 2015, except for a brief interval when Jitan Ram Manjhi occupied the post. His tenure has been marked by shifting alliances, administrative reforms, and a focus on development politics.
For now, there is no official confirmation of his resignation. The political temperature, however, is rising steadily. All eyes are on March 5, when the nomination process may offer clarity. Whether this signals the end of an era in Bihar politics or simply a strategic repositioning by Nitish Kumar will become clear in the coming days.

Summary: Speculation is mounting that Nitish Kumar may step down as Bihar Chief Minister to enter the Rajya Sabha. A key JD(U) meeting is underway in Patna as nomination deadlines approach. The BJP remains the single-largest party in the Assembly, adding complexity to any leadership transition. The filing of nominations on March 5 is expected to provide crucial clarity on Bihar’s political future.
