A video circulating widely on social media has sparked debate after a known history-sheeter was seen addressing a peace committee meeting organised by police in Khanapur. The meeting had been called to ensure calm and cooperation during the celebrations marking the birth anniversaries of Basaveshwara, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and B. R. Ambedkar.

According to local accounts, the man—whose name figures in police records as a rowdy-sheeter—was invited to attend the gathering along with other community representatives. What surprised many, however, was that he was reportedly given the opportunity to speak during the meeting. The moment, captured on video, quickly spread across social media platforms and triggered criticism from sections of the public.
Residents and observers questioned whether it was appropriate for someone with a criminal background to participate in such an official forum, especially one intended to promote communal harmony and cooperation. For many, the issue was not just about one individual but about the broader message such participation might send.
Police documents indicate that a rowdy sheet was opened against the man nearly a decade ago. At the time, he was allegedly involved in incidents linked to communal tension and other criminal activities. Sources also claim that he had previously been associated with Sri Ram Sene, an outfit led by Pramod Muthalik. In later years, he is said to have become active in the Bharatiya Janata Party at the local level.
The incident has led to a wider public conversation about the selection of participants for police-organised peace meetings. Such meetings are typically arranged before major festivals or public events to bring together community leaders, organisers and local influencers who can help maintain harmony. Critics argue that the credibility of these forums could be affected if individuals with serious allegations against them are allowed a prominent role.
When asked about the matter, Superintendent of Police Ramarajan K said that representatives from various local organisations are sometimes invited to these meetings because they play influential roles in community activities. According to him, organisers of local festivals or groups such as Ganapati mandals may be included in discussions even if they have a controversial background, as their participation can help in coordinating large public events.
At the same time, the SP acknowledged that the Khanapur case would be examined carefully. He said the department would review the circumstances under which the individual was invited and allowed to speak, and that appropriate action would be taken if any lapse in protocol was found.
For now, the viral video continues to circulate online, keeping the discussion alive about where authorities should draw the line when balancing community representation with maintaining the integrity of official platforms meant to promote peace and cooperation.
