Actor Shekhar Suman is currently receiving acclaim for his compelling performance as Nawab Zulfikar in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s new web series, “Heeramandi The Diamond Bazaar.” In a revealing interview with Zoom, Suman discussed a particularly challenging scene that has become a talking point among viewers.
In the scene, Suman’s character, a drunken Nawab Zulfikar, mistakenly tries to engage romantically with Manisha Koirala’s character, Mallikajaan. Bhansali envisioned this scene with a bold and unusual twist—the Nawab, in his inebriated confusion, believes he is engaging in fellatio mid-air. This unique direction required a nuanced performance to balance the surreal and comedic elements without crossing into vulgarity.
Suman shared his initial reaction to Bhansali’s concept, stating, “The scene required the Nawab to erroneously think he was receiving fellatio mid-air, convinced Mallikajaan was present. It was a concept that has never been attempted in cinema before. Bhansali gave me the option to refuse if I felt the scene was too bizarre.”
Despite the scene’s potential challenges, Suman managed to nail the performance in a single take. He described how after the scene, Bhansali immediately congratulated him on the spot, exclaiming, ‘Magnificent’, and called it a wrap. This efficiency was welcomed by the crew who expressed their gratitude as it saved them from what could have been a lengthy and tedious shoot.
Suman attributes his success in the scene to his ability to capture the gravity and tone required, avoiding the risk of overacting. His instinctual acting not only preserved the integrity of his character but also underscored his prowess in handling complex and delicate scenes.
“Heeramandi The Diamond Bazaar” continues to be lauded for its engaging narrative and rich visual storytelling, with Shekhar Suman’s performance being a significant highlight. His portrayal of Nawab Zulfikar adds a profound layer to the intricate tapestry of Bhansali’s latest creation.
