In a historic and decisive action, Gujarat Police have detained over 1000 Bangladeshi nationals suspected of illegally residing in the state. This sweeping crackdown comes directly after Home Minister Amit Shah’s directive urging state governments to identify and deport foreign nationals staying without valid documents.
The operation, conducted across Ahmedabad, Surat, and other parts of Gujarat, has sent a strong message: India will not tolerate illegal immigration.
A Coordinated, Large-Scale Operation Across Gujarat
In the early hours of the morning, over 450 Bangladeshi nationals were detained in Ahmedabad and Surat. The combing operations, led by the Crime Branch, Special Operations Group (SOG), Economic Offences Wing (EOW), and local police units, were meticulously planned and based on credible intelligence inputs.
Speaking about the crackdown, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), Ajit Rajian said:
“More than 450 illegal immigrants, mostly from Bangladesh, have been detained and are being interrogated. If found without valid documents, they will be deported.”
Rajian further confirmed that the detainees were temporarily housed at Kankaria Football Ground for verification and legal procedures.
Crackdown Based On Amit Shah’s Firm Instructions
The massive operation follows Home Minister Amit Shah’s strong stance against illegal immigration. In a recent meeting with all state chief ministers, Shah emphasized the need to identify and deport foreign nationals living unlawfully in India.
Sharad Singhal, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), confirmed:
“This operation was carried out under direct instructions from the Home Minister, the Commissioner of Police, and the Director General of Police.”
Notably, even before this latest move, Gujarat police had registered two FIRs since April 2024, resulting in the arrest of 127 Bangladeshi nationals and deportation of 77 individuals.
Surat Operations: A Detailed Intelligence-Based Action
In Surat, under the leadership of DCP (SOG) Rajdeep Singh Nakum, over 450 suspected illegal immigrants were detained. The detainees were found using forged documents to reside and work in India.
Nakum stated:
“They had entered India illegally and were living with forged documents. After investigation, they will be deported to Bangladesh.”
The Surat operations were carried out with clockwork precision, ensuring minimal disruption to the general public while maintaining tight security.
Why This Crackdown Matters
Illegal immigration poses serious challenges to national security, economic stability, and social harmony. By identifying and deporting those residing without valid documentation, the government aims to:
- Safeguard India’s borders.
- Protect local employment opportunities.
- Maintain law and order.
- Strengthen internal security.
This bold step by Gujarat Police sets an example for other states to follow in addressing illegal immigration issues seriously.
What Happens Next?
After completing verification and legal formalities, individuals found without legitimate documentation will be deported to Bangladesh. Authorities are ensuring that the entire process complies with human rights guidelines and international norms.
Gujarat’s Message Is Clear: Illegal Stay Will Not Be Tolerated
This crackdown reinforces India’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty and ensuring that immigration laws are respected. The Gujarat Police, under firm leadership and clear instructions from the Home Ministry, have showcased swift, lawful, and impactful action.
