Kota, Rajasthan –

Fourth suicide in Kota: In another tragic incident, a 16-year-old aspiring JEE candidate was found dead in his maternal grandparents’ home in Kota on the morning of January 18. He was the fourth student to commit suicide within the city so far this year. The young man hanged himself within less than 48 hours since another JEE aspirant, Abhijeet Giri, ended his life in a hostel room.
According to police, no suicide note was recovered from Manan’s room in Jawahar Nagar. The Class 12 student from Indergarh, Bundi district, had been living in Kota for three years to prepare for the highly competitive IIT-JEE exam.
The police received news of the incident around 9:15 a.m. on Saturday. Assistant Sub-Inspector Jawahar Singh said that Manan was seen studying with his cousin till midnight on Friday. The next morning, when he did not answer calls, the cousin found him hanging from the iron railing of a window.
Manan’s family refused to give him up for a postmortem but consented to donating his eyes before handing over the body. Mahaveer Jain, his maternal uncle, said he was an excellent student who was to appear for the JEE-Main on January 22.
This incident follows the suicide of 18-year-old Abhijeet Giri from Odisha on January 16. Abhijeet, a JEE aspirant, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room in Vigyan Nagar area. Bipin Giri, his elder brother, described him as a hardworking and excellent student who scored 93-94% in Class 10.
These deaths are a part of a worrisome trend in Kota, which is the coaching center hub that welcomes thousands of students preparing for competitive exams such as JEE and NEET. In 2024, the city saw 17 student suicides.
Earlier this month, on January 8, a 20-year-old JEE aspirant hanged himself to death in his PG room. A day earlier, another Haryana-based JEE aspirant was found hanging in his hostel room.
Such incidents have raised serious concerns about the mental health of students and the high pressure attached to preparing for competitive exams in Kota. Experts and activists are demanding immediate steps for the well-being of students through counseling services and awareness programs to prevent further tragedies.
Authorities and coaching centers have so far not released specific measures for stopping this scary trend. The devastating consequences that this system produces have been, instead, confronted by families and teachers.
