ED Raids Former Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s Residence in CMRL Money Laundering Probe

The political atmosphere in Kerala turned tense on Wednesday morning after Enforcement Directorate officials reached the residence linked to former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as part of the ongoing probe into the Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) money laundering case. The searches, carried out under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), were not limited to a single location. Officials reportedly conducted raids at nearly ten premises across the state, including locations connected to people and entities already under the scanner in the controversial financial case.

The development immediately triggered sharp political reactions, with CPI(M) leaders accusing the Centre of using investigative agencies to target opposition voices. Outside some of the searched locations, party workers gathered in protest, raising slogans against the BJP-led Union government and alleging political vendetta.

At the heart of the controversy is a financial transaction involving CMRL and Exalogic Solutions, a company linked to Vijayan’s daughter, T Veena. According to allegations being examined by the ED, CMRL allegedly transferred around ₹1.72 crore to Exalogic Solutions between 2018 and 2019 despite no visible IT services being provided in return. Investigators suspect the payments may have been irregular and are now trying to trace the money trail and understand the nature of the transactions.

The case has been politically explosive from the beginning because it indirectly touches Kerala’s most influential political family. Even though Pinarayi Vijayan himself has not been named as an accused in the case, the ED’s move to search premises associated with him has dramatically escalated the matter and brought it back into the national spotlight.

The raids came barely a day after the Kerala High Court refused to interfere with the ED investigation. CMRL had approached the court seeking to quash the proceedings initiated by the agency, but the plea was dismissed, allowing the investigation to continue. The court order is being seen as a major boost for the central agency, which has intensified its action following the legal setback for the company.

Political observers say the timing of the raids has added fuel to an already heated debate in Kerala. Opposition parties have repeatedly questioned the financial dealings connected to Exalogic Solutions, while the ruling Left Democratic Front has maintained that the allegations are being exaggerated for political mileage.

CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby reacted strongly after news of the searches emerged. He alleged that central agencies were increasingly being used as political tools against opposition leaders across the country. Drawing comparisons with cases involving several opposition politicians in recent years, he claimed that the ED was functioning in line with the political interests of the BJP and RSS.

His remarks quickly became part of a larger national political argument over the role of central investigative agencies. Similar accusations have surfaced in several states whenever opposition leaders have faced action from the ED, CBI, or Income Tax Department. The BJP, however, has consistently rejected those allegations and maintained that investigative agencies are acting independently based on evidence.

Meanwhile, protests broke out in parts of Kannur and other Left strongholds in Kerala soon after the raids were reported. CPI(M) workers gathered on roads, raised banners, and condemned the ED action. Many party supporters described the searches as an attempt to politically target leaders associated with the Left movement in the state.

The controversy has once again placed Kerala politics under national attention. Pinarayi Vijayan remains one of the most powerful and influential leaders in the state despite no longer holding the chief minister’s office. Any investigation involving his family naturally carries massive political weight, especially at a time when national parties are trying to expand their influence in southern India.

For the ED, the focus remains on whether the payments made by CMRL to Exalogic Solutions violated money laundering laws or financial regulations. Officials are expected to examine documents, digital records, bank transactions, and communication linked to the case in the coming days.

The investigation is still unfolding, and much will depend on what evidence emerges from the ongoing searches and financial analysis. But politically, the impact is already visible. The raids have reignited debates over corruption allegations, misuse of agencies, and the growing confrontation between opposition parties and the Centre.

In Kerala, where political narratives often shape public mood quickly, the CMRL case is now set to dominate discussions both inside the Assembly and on the streets.
