Ballari, Karnataka – In an incredible incident on Saturday morning in Ballari, Karnataka, Doctor Sunil, a paediatrician aged 45 years who is working in the Ballari district hospital, was abducted by a gang which demanded for ₹6 crores as ransom. The abductors, however, released him within a few hours, only to give him a mere ₹300 for return fare. The public and the police were stunned.
The abduction occurred around 6 am when Doctor Sunil, who went on his usual morning walk near the Shaneshwara temple in Suryanarayanapet, was intercepted and kidnapped by a gang of men in a Tata Indigo car. The entire incident was captured through CCTV.
Immediately after the kidnapping, the gang communicated with Doctor Sunil’s brother, Venugopal Gupta-a well-known businessman and president of district liquor dealers’ association. The gang had demanded a ransom of ₹6 crore, for which half in gold was asked to be deposited. The businessman, who panicked at the immediate threat, intimated the local police, and the police sprang into a search operation setting up road blocks at all entry/exit points from the district for the kidnappers.
After thorough search operations, Doctor Sunil was freed around 8 pm at a remote place. Miraculously, the kidnappers dropped him with just ₹300, sufficient to travel back home by bus. The police feel that the abduction could be in connection with Gupta’s business status, and an investigation team has been formed in this regard.
Local political leaders have actually raised concerns about growing crime rates in the state. BJP MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy condemned the incident and cited the deteriorating situation of law and order as a reason to call for immediate action from the state government.
After the kidnapping, the police remain optimistic, as ongoing investigations will soon reveal much more about the motives of the kidnappers and the broader implications of the crime. The weird release has only added to the mystery surrounding the case. Authorities are working to connect the dots and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
