MUMBAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) core committee meeting in the metropolis on December 4 decided to nominate Maharashtra’s next Chief Minister for his third term, reports B Saritra. Mr Fadnavis will take oath as the Leader of the Maharashtra BJP Legislative Party at Azad Maidan on December 5 following unanimous election.

The swearing-in ceremony will also see Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar take the oath as Deputy Chief Ministers, ending days of speculation over leadership roles in the newly formed Mahayuti (Grand Alliance) government.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was acting as central observer for the legislature party, attended the BJP meeting. It was after consulting with the BJP and alliance leaders that the decision was taken and brought an end to weeks of rumors regarding the next Maharashtra CM.

The results of the Maharashtra Assembly Elections held on November 20 were declared on November 23, with Mahayuti securing a comfortable majority of 230 seats. The largest party was BJP, securing 132 seats, and Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde won 57 seats, while Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction secured 41 seats.
Speculation had been rife whether Eknath Shinde would accept the Chief Minister position or not. However, recent developments showed that he was ready to take up the Deputy CM position. According to reports, Shinde’s “ill health” last week caused him to delay his official response to the BJP’s proposal. On December 4, Fadnavis went to Shinde’s Varsha residence in Mumbai to finalize the arrangements.

Shinde, who played a key role in forming the Mahayuti alliance, has reportedly accepted the role of Deputy CM, ensuring stability in the coalition government.

Mahayuti Government’s Road Ahead

It seems that the ministers of Fadnavis’ cabinet would not take oath on December 5. The government, therefore, would come up in a phased manner. With a very strong majority, the Mahayuti government is expected to focus more on implementing promises and taking care of the state’s challenges.

Significance of the Leadership Change

This will be his third term as Maharashtra Chief Minister, solidifying him as a top BJP leader in the state. His experience and leadership will bring stability and direction to the Mahayuti alliance. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Azad Maidan and is likely to be attended by top BJP leaders and alliance partners in a new chapter of Maharashtra’s political landscape.
