The arrest of a serving Indian Police Service officer on allegations of corruption has sent shockwaves through law enforcement circles after the Central Bureau of Investigation detained Haryana cadre IPS officer Deepak Gehlawat in connection with an alleged bribery network linked to fake medicines investigations.
Gehlawat, a 2012-batch IPS officer currently serving on central deputation with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in New Delhi, was taken into custody after investigators uncovered evidence suggesting that he allegedly attempted to leverage his official stature and personal influence to secure favourable outcomes in ongoing cases being probed by the CBI.
According to officials familiar with the investigation, the case revolves around allegations that Gehlawat assured certain private individuals that he could use his contacts and influence to provide relief in CBI cases related to the sale and distribution of counterfeit medicines in Puducherry. Investigators claim that these assurances came with an illegal demand for monetary consideration in return for intervention in the legal process.
The CBI stated that Gehlawat’s alleged involvement surfaced during the investigation of a corruption case registered on June 8, 2026, against Delhi Police Inspector Pradeep Singh and two private individuals. As investigators examined financial transactions, communication records and interactions among the accused, the role of the senior IPS officer reportedly emerged as a significant element of the broader conspiracy.
The counterfeit medicines angle has added another layer of seriousness to the case. Fake drug networks are considered one of the most dangerous forms of organised crime because they directly threaten public health and can endanger lives by pushing substandard or ineffective medicines into the market. Investigative agencies have increasingly intensified action against such syndicates across multiple states in recent years.
CBI officials allege that the accused attempted to exploit the fears and vulnerabilities of individuals facing scrutiny in these investigations by offering unofficial assurances of relief and influence within investigative mechanisms. The agency believes the alleged demands for money were made under the pretext of arranging favourable treatment or intervention in sensitive cases.
Earlier in the probe, the agency had already arrested Delhi Police Inspector Pradeep Singh along with six other accused persons. During those operations, investigators recovered approximately Rs 25 lakh as trap money, nearly Rs 90 lakh in cash and several documents that officials described as important pieces of evidence in establishing the money trail and the alleged conspiracy.
The sizeable cash recoveries had already raised concerns about the scale of the operation and the possibility of a wider network operating behind the scenes. The subsequent emergence of an IPS officer’s name in the investigation has intensified scrutiny and could potentially lead investigators towards additional leads and financial transactions.
While the CBI has not publicly disclosed the complete details of the evidence gathered against Gehlawat, officials indicated that the investigation remains active and further arrests or disclosures cannot be ruled out as financial records and communication data continue to be examined.
The arrest is also likely to trigger discussions within administrative and policing circles regarding accountability among senior officers serving on central deputation. Cases involving senior civil servants and police officers attract heightened public attention because they raise broader questions about institutional integrity and public trust in enforcement agencies.
For the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, where Gehlawat was posted at the time of his arrest, the development represents an uncomfortable moment as the organisation plays a crucial role in safeguarding India’s aviation infrastructure and maintaining security standards at airports and aviation facilities across the country.
