Sonia Gandhi’s sharp criticism of the Waqf Bill sparks BJP outrage. The Congress vows to challenge the bill in the Supreme Court. Catch all the political drama here.

New Delhi – A fierce political storm has erupted in the wake of the Lok Sabha’s late-night passage of the Waqf Bill, with BJP leaders demanding an apology from Congress matriarch Sonia Gandhi for her fiery remarks against the legislation.
Addressing a Congress Parliamentary Party meeting held at Samvidhan Sadan, Sonia Gandhi didn’t mince words. She described the Waqf Bill as a “brazen assault on the Constitution” and accused the Modi government of pushing India into a state of “permanent polarisation.”
“Whether it is education, civil rights, our federal structure, or elections—this government is dragging the country into an abyss where our Constitution will remain only on paper,” she declared.
The Congress leader also tore into the One Nation, One Election Bill, calling it a “subversion of the Constitution” and pledging that the Congress would strongly resist it.
BJP Hits Back, Demands Apology
Not taking kindly to Gandhi’s statements, BJP MPs led by Nishikant Dubey launched a scathing counterattack in Parliament. They claimed that Sonia Gandhi had insulted the Constitution and accused her of defaming the government. Friday morning saw Lok Sabha proceedings disrupted as BJP MPs chanted “Sonia Gandhi maafi maango” (Sonia Gandhi, apologise), demanding a public apology.
The political showdown reached a crescendo with Opposition members demanding answers on separate issues, including the US tariff imposition, further stalling Parliamentary proceedings.
What’s in the Waqf Bill?
Passed after a marathon 12-hour debate, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill sailed through the Lok Sabha with a vote count of 288 in favour and 232 against. Opposition-led amendments were rejected via voice vote. The Bill later cleared the Rajya Sabha with 128 votes in favour and 95 against, amid intense debate.
While the government hailed the bill as a historic reform to empower minority communities and ensure transparency in Waqf property management, Opposition parties slammed it as “anti-Muslim” and “unconstitutional.”
Congress Vows to Move Supreme Court
The Congress party is not backing down. Senior leader Jairam Ramesh took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to announce the party’s decision to challenge the Bill in the Supreme Court, calling it an attack on the principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
“We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi government on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India,” Ramesh said.
Sonia’s Broader Critique of Modi Government
Sonia Gandhi also used the platform to accuse PM Modi of rebranding UPA-era schemes and presenting them as his own. She urged Congress MPs to fight misinformation, highlighting failures in BJP-ruled states with facts and research. She also blamed the Treasury benches for disrupting House proceedings to prevent the Opposition from raising critical issues.
Political Tensions Soar Ahead of Elections
With elections looming and the Parliament’s monsoon session in full swing, the Waqf Bill controversy has added fuel to an already volatile political climate. Whether this episode will translate into legal victories or political gains for either party remains to be seen.
But one thing is clear—the Waqf Bill has stirred the hornet’s nest, and both sides are bracing for a prolonged battle, both inside the Parliament and in the public arena.
