ISRO Captures Stunning Before-And-After Satellite Views of Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj

Satellite Views of Mahakumbh 2025 – The Mahakumbh 2025 has become the largest religious congregation on earth as over 400 million devotees throng the sacred city of Prayagraj. This grand spiritual event, stretching over 45 days, started on January 13, and its magnitude was now captured through stunning satellite imagery by the Indian Space Research Organisation.

ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Center, Hyderabad, took advantage of advanced radar technology to peel through the veil of clouds for crystal-clear imagery of the sprawling affair. The pictures, taken by the EOS-04 (RISAT-1A), give an unparalleled view of the massive infrastructure in the Triveni Sangam—the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

The Mahakumbh’s scale is unparalleled. Devotees immerse themselves in the holy waters, seeking purification from sins and liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Alongside these sacred rituals, the event also features religious discourses by saints and spiritual leaders.

The EOS-04 satellite carrying ‘C’ band microwave technology and with a fine resolution of 2.25 meters (FRS-1) has captured very clear images of the sprawling tent cities, the roads, and the pontoon bridges that have been constructed to accomodate the hordes of pilgrims. The all-weather satellite facility insured perfect imaging, even under trying conditions.

By comparing time-series images from September 15, 2023, and December 29, 2024, ISRO documented the event’s infrastructure development. These visuals highlight the meticulous planning and scale of preparations undertaken to manage this global spectacle.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shared the images on X (formerly Twitter), calling them “stunning depictions of the Maha Kumbh Mela as seen from space.” The images have captivated audiences worldwide, offering a rare view of the event’s grandeur from orbit.

The Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is a pillar of Indian spiritual tradition. The Mahakumbh, occurring once in 144 years, is even more crucial. The 2025 edition, which began on January 10, witnessed over 16 million devotees taking a sacred dip at the Sangam on Makar Sankranti alone. The event will continue until February 26, drawing millions more to participate in its divine offerings.

The images released by ISRO underscore not only the spiritual fervor but also the logistical marvel of Mahakumbh 2025. The tent cities, roads, and bridges constructed to support the event reflect an extraordinary effort by the authorities to facilitate the world’s largest gathering of humanity.

As Mahakumbh 2025 progresses, the satellite imagery serves as a testament to the confluence of faith, culture, and technology. This unique collaboration between spirituality and science has made Mahakumbh 2025 an event for the ages—visible not only to those on Earth but also to eyes in the sky.
