Basti Murder Case: A quiet village in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district was shaken by tragedy when an 18-year-old Class 12 student was allegedly shot dead while she slept in the veranda of her home. The shocking incident has left the community grieving and raised serious questions about whether earlier warning signs were ignored.

According to police officials, the young woman was sleeping outside her house on Monday night when she was shot. Family members rushed her to a nearby community health centre, but doctors declared her dead on arrival. The sudden and brutal nature of the attack has sent waves of fear across the village.
Additional Superintendent of Police Shyam Kant confirmed that no written complaint had been submitted immediately after the incident. However, he acknowledged that the family has expressed suspicion about a youth from the same village. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and police say further action will follow based on evidence and statements.
The victim’s mother, Anita, has directly accused 22-year-old Mandeep Paswan of murdering her daughter. She claims that this was not an isolated incident but the tragic outcome of months of harassment. According to Anita, on December 19, 2025, the accused allegedly molested her daughter and recorded an explicit video to pressure her into a physical relationship. He reportedly forced her to consider marriage and threatened her using the video.
Anita said that a case had been registered at Kalwari Police Station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) along with Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, which deals with publishing or transmitting obscene material electronically. Despite the registration of the case, she alleges that no strong preventive action was taken to ensure her daughter’s safety.
The victim’s father, Dinesh Kumar, works in Punjab to support the family financially, while Anita lived in the village with her daughter and son. The mother believes her daughter was targeted because she resisted the accused’s demands. Instead of preparing for her board examinations and planning her future, the young girl’s life has been cut short in a violent act that has stunned the entire locality.
Villagers have begun questioning whether timely and stricter action in the earlier molestation case could have prevented this tragedy. Concerns about women’s safety and the handling of harassment complaints have resurfaced, especially in rural areas where victims often face social pressure and limited protection.

Police officials say the investigation is ongoing and that they are awaiting the post-mortem report. Statements from family members and local residents are being recorded. Authorities have assured that appropriate action will be taken based on findings.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family continues to demand justice. Anita has openly accused the local police of negligence and has called for strict punishment for the accused. Her voice, filled with grief and anger, reflects the pain of a mother who believes her daughter could have been saved.
The case has once again highlighted how unresolved harassment complaints can escalate into fatal consequences if not handled with urgency. As the investigation unfolds, the village waits for answers—and a grieving family waits for justice.
