New Delhi: The chief of the Aam Aadmi Party, Arvind Kejriwal, the former Chief Minister of Delhi, Thursday alleged that his car was attacked when he had a public meeting in the national capital’s Hari Nagar area. Posting on X (formerly known as Twitter), Kejriwal also alleged that Delhi Police was collaborating with the attackers by letting other supporters of competing candidates enter into the meeting to execute the attack.
Criticising Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a strongly-worded post, Kejriwal lamented that Shah is using the Delhi Police as a political tool of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “Today in Hari Nagar, the police allowed the opposition candidate’s men to enter my public meeting and then attack my car,” Kejriwal wrote. “All this is happening on the orders of Amit Shah.”. Amit Shah has made the Delhi Police the personal army of the BJP.

The AAP convenor also targeted the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its inability to take effective action against such attacks. “Major questions are being raised on the Election Commission that the national president of a national party and its leaders are being constantly attacked, and the Election Commission is unable to take any effective action,” Kejriwal posted.
It’s not the first time the AAP has accused its rival parties of orchestrating attacks on its leader. Last November, the party alleged that Kejriwal was attacked during a padyatra in the Greater Kailash area. AAP Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed that an attacker linked to the BJP tried to burn Kejriwal alive by throwing spirit on him and carrying a matchbox.
AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal held a padyatra in Savitri Nagar area of Greater Kailash. Suddenly, a man threw spirit at him and tried to burn him alive. This is a serious matter. Since Arvind Kejriwal launched his padyatra, BJP can sense its defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections, which is why they are now conspiring against him,” Bharadwaj said at the time.
Political Climate Ahead of Delhi Elections
This attack has occurred at a sensitive time since the Delhi Assembly is ready to hold elections on February 5. Counting for votes will be on February 8. A total of 699 candidates will fight for 70 assembly seats.
The AAP, which has swept the last two assembly elections with landslides in 2015 and 2020—securing 67 and 62 seats respectively—will have to battle against the BJP and Congress. BJP did not do well at either election, managing only three and eight seats, while the Congress, which was once considered a giant that had enjoyed uninterrupted power for 15 years, has failed to win any seats in the last two elections.
As the campaigning gains momentum, Kejriwal’s allegations and political blame game would only fuel up the already charged atmosphere in the political landscape of Delhi.
